why didn't they pay? This will be good for KitKat.
From what I read, the name change seemed like a last minute concoction by some development guys at Google.

Just something fun they threw together. If you look at the new website and video, you can see both are enjoying laughing at themselves and others:

But it's a short term partnership at best. Maybe a year, probably less. There's no need for a lot of money to exchange hands.

He needed to be wearing a black turtle neck sweater for that video. 😀

I went to an Asian grocery store yesterday and picked up a Japanese green Kit Kat.

Looks like this, but came in a Kit Kat-sized green cardboard box.

Android 4.4 Key Lime Kit Kat?

LOL....some of you guys need to take a step back and chill. Go smoke some weed or take a Valium. To get all uptight about what they call an Android version is sad. Lighten up on the caffeine....lol

The publicity of this release, and the recognizability of the name could do wonders to emphasize Android, rather than leaving consumers to focus on Samsung or Galaxy. This might somewhat strengthen the desire for manufacturers like Samsung to emphasize that their phones are Android phones, and KitKat phones, rather than inching towards their own OS, Tizen. Or, at least, it would have more people looking for Android, and noticing that Samsung isn't (at some future date) running Android anymore.

Just a bit of speculation.

Android KitKat release date revealed by Nestle - TechRadar
Replying to a user on its German KitKat Facebook wall, the translated message reads: "Hi Tim, Android 4.4 KIT KAT is available in October".There have been rumours circulating that Google is planning an event on October 14, at which the search giant is expected to announce details on the next iteration of its mobile platform.

Probably will be launched with Nexus 5. October it is then.

Android 4.4 Key Lime Kit Kat?

Japan has a ton of regional flavors.

Does anyone know why Google scrapped "Key Lime Pie," "5.0" and backed down to 4.4 Kitkat? Curious whether this is simply name/number change (for whatever reasons) or whether there is a more fundamental reason for it. (e.g. some big feature Google planned for 5.0 not making the cut/deadline)

I don't know if "5.0" was ever real. Seems like we've been guessing Android versioning numbers incorrectly for a while now.

I think Google wants to use smaller number increments so that people stuck on older versions don't feel so bad. Having an Android 4.2 while while 4.4 gets released doesn't look as bad as having an Android 4.2 phone with Android 5.0 gets released. I imagine it's the manufactures that want this.

I think Key Lime Pie was a real code name. But then the marketing department got involved and voila, Kit Kat with a tie in with the candy company.

It's not 5.0 because it's not a major revision. Gingerbread to Ice Cream Sandwich was a huge upgrade, hence the full number change. Also with many core apps and functions being decoupled there's less new stuff in the actual OS update itself, many of the new features come via direct app updates throughout the year.

Previous major revisions of android signified platform changes.

2.0 was for cellphones.
3.0 was for tablets.
4.0 was the merging of the two versions, for an android that worked well with either type of device.

Maybe google is saving 5.0 for a desktop/tv box/laptop version of android.

But for a few select individuals it's much sweeter to hate on Google and get stuck on the name Kitkat since there is little else revealed to whine about at the moment. I get what you are saying, one should spend time enjoying the superior non Android devices/OS. However for few select ones, it's more entertaining to speculate that 4.4 will be all about Kitkat, maybe each time a 4.4 device is booted users will be forced to watch a 30 second Kitkat ad because Google is all about ads... If Android is an inferior platform as some would love to point out why is it attracting so much attention then, I would expect users of superior platforms to be too busy with their devices to even comment on the lowly Android...

Agreed, 5.0 is probably saved for a major revision down the road.
