How about a 2.2 wish list thread?

I'm pretty new to the platform myself - I jumped on the HTC Incredible a few weeks ago, and I'm thoroughly impressed with it.

I'm aware there are some articles floating around that list what will be included with 2.2. Is there anything missing that you guys would like to see?

Here's my list:

- Improved EAS integration: Ability to connect to multiple Exchange servers, support for Radius/OTP protected servers, etc.
- "Combined inbox" so incoming email from multiple accounts + voice mail & SMS appear in a single screen like on Blackberry devices.
- Native support for flash card encryption.
- Improved native shortcut handling (rename, etc.)
- Multitouch keyboard support.

I'm not sure what all is on the list of what is included, but what I want:

-Bluetooth voice dialing
-multitouch keyboard support (not a huge problem if not though)
- being able to add words to the dictionary that aren't "words". This is on blackberry OS right now. You can add "il" to the dictionary and it will correct it to "I'll" for example
- I want to use the integrated 8 GB of flash on the incredible for apps
- Fix the compression for MMS. If i take a picture with the camera set on 8 MP, it downsizes the picture to about a 15k tiny little thumbnail when it sends. If i lower it to 5 MP it will usually come in under the 1.2 MB limit and will send at full size. I'm currently using handcent SMS and it works much better for compression on SMS.
- Copy and paste in Gmail app

That's all I can think of at the moment

So you can't use the integrated 8gb ATM? What do you get to use then? How much of it?

What I'd like to see in no particular order

1. App storage on SD card
2. Support for Exchange contact look up (not sync)
3. Exchange calendar support
4. WiFi hotspot
5. USB tethering
6. Fix images issue in Gmail

Not sure if this is what you mean but you can add words. Manually type out the unrecognized word then when it pops up suggestions, the first item on the left will be the word as you spelled it out. For example "Jeezy." If you click on it, I believe it saves it as a custom dictionary word/

Well right now you get something like 740 MB of app space, but the full 8 GB you can only use for pictures/music/whatever. No apps on the marketplace can use the 8 GB storage either, so you have to have a microSD card installed. The only apps that recognize/use the 8 GB onboard is the HTC apps that are built into the phone.

Nah I know you can add words, but on Blackberry you can go into the dictionary and add "u" = "you", so if you wanted to say "you" you can just type "U" for short. It's not a real big deal but I got used to having it

Hmm this is a little confusing. The issue with the Android OS is they won't allow you to install apps to the microSD card, you can only use it for media. So you run out of ROM space pretty quickly. I am not sure if we understand this the same way or one of us is confused.

The issue with the Incredible is that its 8GB of internal storage doesn't quite function as SDcard storage and is therefore not visible to market apps/external apps. So if you downloaded an e-reader app and want to download books, the internal storage won't appear and you'd need an actual SDcard to save the download to. Only the stock HTC apps included with the phone can see and use the internal storage. I remember reading somewhere that this should be fixed in the near future, probably with 2.2 I'd imagine, but who knows when the Incredible will see 2.2.

This is the same issue on every Android OS. The ROM space is just for app storage. You should feel fortunate that the Incredible has 8GB of ROM. Your complaint that it can't be used for data storage (i.e. books, not the e-reader app itself) is missing the real limitation of Android. Buying a microSD card was something I anticipated I would need on my Nexus One, but right now I have 99% of it free because my issue isn't the storage space for media but for apps. Android 2.2 will likely allow you to install APPS on the SD card.

No, I think you're still confused. The Incredible has 748MB of ROM to install apps in. No one is expecting to be able to install apps to the 8GB internal storage, at least not until proper Apps2SD support is built in to Android.

The 8GB of internal storage is separate and is supposed to be in lieu of having an SD card included with the phone. Just think of it as a non-removable 8GB microSD card. The problem is that it's not mounted as an SD card in Android's filesystem and thus cannot be seen by apps that expect to use an SD card for storage. On every other Android device, apps can store data and cache on the SD card and you can do things like download Gmail and MMS attachments or files from a web browser to your SD card. You can't do that with the phone's internal storage, _unless_ you use only the native HTC apps that came with the phone.

Another example: You put a bunch of music on the internal storage. If you use the stock HTC music app, you can see those files and play them. If you use a music app from the market (3 cubed for example), it can't see those files at all. If you wanted to play music through 3 cubed, you'd have to buy an SD card and move your music to the card just so the app could see and use it.

For now the 8GB of internal storage is pretty much only useful as a flash drive to transfer files, or to store pics and videos taken with the HTC camera app because that's one of the few apps that come with the phone that can even see the internal storage. That is, at least until developers start updating their apps to check for internal storage as well as SD storage, but that doesn't seem to be happening very quickly so far. I know where HTC was trying to go with the internal storage but they would've been better off just including an SD card instead.

Bullhonkie thanks for the clarification.

I own the HTC Diamond and it also has a similar issue. The internal 4gb space is separate.

Its quite frustrating that all these different forms of storage can't be utilized universally. I think all phones should do away with internal storage and just use a microsd. Then have the microsd viewable by all apps.
