30. Full fledged Exchange support


Have you tried this yet? Is it a version of Activesync or does it just finally complete the existing Google sync client?

This would be big for me as I have a number of customers who haven't picked up a new Android smartphone yet because it doesn't that full EAS...

Also, the full security stuff. I have used Touchdown and it works ok...but it doesn't fully integrate the contacts in with the phone contact book...and saving a phone number to a new contact (from phone log) doesn't work.

Minor things...but customers and I agree it should work 😉 Let's hope it works with Froyo (mmm).

I agree with Tasks, they need to find a way to bring that into Android (Google Tasks?) as part of the EAS sync.

Saving a phone number to a new contact from the phone log works fine for me on my Incredible (2.1 + HTC Sense UI - not using Touchdown). When I hit the "+" on an unidentified number in the log, I get a popup asking me which account to save the new contact to. I just select my Exchange account (or any of my other accounts if I want) and a new contact is opened with the number populated in the phone field. Works perfectly for me, but it may work differently for someone on a stock Android build.

Here is a summary of EAS improvements in 2.2:

Exchange support

Improved security with the addition of numeric pin or alpha-numeric password options to unlock device. Exchange administrators can enforce password policy across devices.

Remote wipe: Exchange administrators can remotely reset the device to factory defaults to secure data in case device is lost or stolen.

Exchange Calendars are now supported in the Calendar application.

Auto-discovery: you just need to know your user-name and password to easily set up and sync an Exchange account (available for Exchange 2007 and higher).

Global Address Lists look-up is now available in the Email application, enabling users to auto-complete recipient names from the directory.

If you have clients asking about this new functionality, I highly suggest downloading the Android SDK and playing with 2.2 in emulation. It takes only a few minutes to install and you can verify pretty much everything you need to know with this tool.

I may take a look at the SDK...but I have a functional SBS 2008 environment and a new Droid...so I can do the real "smoke" test...LOL
 
Damn. I was really hoping they would fix (read: un-fvck) the email program. Seriously, I have to select every damn email one at a time, and then delete it. And then it goes to an trash can, that I have to select each email one at a time, and delete it. WTF.

I'd be happy with that, and call it 2.3

are you talking about gmail? or the non-gmail email app? there's an app for non gmail accounts called k9 mail that's supposed to be very good

The non-gmail email client. It drives me insane while using it to check email. It's the one thing I miss about my crackberry -- email was handled so very well. It's a shame the default email client on the Droid sucks so bad, but I will definitely look into your suggestion.

Is this a Droid only issue? Or Droid/milestone? I know the Milestone has a lot of issues with alarms and currently the Telus firmware is the one that has the fixes. I imagine the Droid came out late like Telus (for 2.1 that is) and so had a lot of fixes that the Euro Milestone is suffering from.

But anyway, if this is more of a Droid/Milestone issue, I will blame Moto for having terrible firmware. There's probably a billion things wrong with their firmware for the Milestone.
 
I finally got around to installing Froyo (manually installed the final version being pushed out OTA). I think there's a couple things not mentioned in the OP. I noticed that most apps that can rotate into landscape mode can now do so in either direction, which is nice. Also, in #27 it's mentioned that your current Gmail account is shown at top right when logged in. What's not mentioned is that this is actually a clickable button that allows you to switch quickly between accounts - very helpful if you have more than one. Also, on my Nexus One I can now use apps from the market that control the camera flash (i.e. TeslaLED and numerous other flashlight apps) and the trackball notification colors (Gmail Notifier, Blink LED, Handcent, Kitchen Timer, etc.) These did not work correctly on 2.1.

Flash works OK with the stock browser but God help you if you are not on Wifi or at least a strong 3G signal. Otherwise it really slows things down.

Overall it's definitely a nice little upgrade. Should have just done it sooner.

i watched some wimbledon at lunch on espn3 today...one guy had a new iphone and he was like "what site is that?" i'm like....sorry buddy, no go 😀
 
yeah the android community only allows 003 + epson screens to be "fixed" by the 60 fps hack. A lot of 002 phones or 003 with novatec screens aren't able to use this hack at all!
