9Kb/s? :Q I'd KILL for those speeds. I am on serious suckass dialup. $10/mo and I'm lucky to see 2.5Kb/s on a good day. It's usually around 1.75Kb/s.

I've tweaked the modem to the best of my ability. This is it.

Don't you got that satellite cr@p? Why not connect to the interweb with that?

Depends on what modem you're using? Hardware or software? Any jumpers on it? Is it ISA? ISA slots don't go through the cpu (like PCI bus does) so eventually you get better connection speeds.

No.

9600k bps.

Or a download speed of around 1.0K/sec, after TCP/IP overhead.

Is that from AT&T's internet-via-cellphone bit? 'cause I might put up with that if I could get online to chat (just chat at that speed) anywhere I had cellphone service.

So they've fixed the speed reading in XP then? (Or at least put it into the proper units) 'cause if it was saying 9.6 K on 98 that'd be almost double what a 56k connection can get.

By the way, I am attempting to amass a collection of 9600 and below modems. Why? I don't really know. But I am. I almost scored a 300 baud modem. Whoo-ee.

P.S. Unfortunately I don't have any screenshots, but back in the day I used to be on a college connection that was fairly fast, though they capped the speed for each user. Well I was involved in... shall we say some unpleasantness with someone else online and the IT department investigated my connection for a while, to check to see if I was doing anything "naughty". They found nothing and I was off the hook, but apparantly while they were poking around they removed my bandwidth cap. Suddenly I had full access to 7xT1 speeds. I was able to run two IRC fservs, one Tribes game server, download stuff from other fservs and play other online games, all at the same time and all without any noticeable bandwidth issues in any of the other programs. It lasted like that until I left. Sigh... good times. Good times.
