And then I just heard that we only have 8 people here today on my team and so now we get the work of a team of 22 divided between the 8 of us. What a lovely way to start of 2k8.

I'm not sure what you do, but surely 8 people cannot be expected to do the work of 22 people.

Well, maybe not, but they sure as hell can be MADE to do it. Never underestimate the idiocy of management.

I do underwriting and we have 3 days to get the work that comes in today done, but since more work will come in tomorrow we try to get everything done each day. Just is the first day of the business year for people and they see they have new time off so they blow through it and have it gone by March. The first few months of every year are busy because we have more people out, but after March or so it calms down.

If 300 Spartans can take on a million Persians, surely 8 underwriters can underwrite 24 underwriters worth of work.

We have more than half of our team missing, but it includes at least one boss, so who cares?

You might think management is full of idiots but when you are a manager and you have to deal with the crying and begging and pleading to let someone take a vacation day off for their mom in town or their cousins wedding or whatever you will see how situations like this happen especially around the holidays.

"First come first served" worked for me. Unless you're expecting a massive lull in business, signing off over two-thirds of the team to be on holiday is retarded.

OP, do your normal work and fuck the clueless management. They deserve to get shit on for the massive backlog that will ensue.

I have a couple of friends who get 160 hours of PTO every year. They are the same way, and somehow burn through every bit of PTO they have by the end of April from planned vacations to sick days. The rest of the year they are able to take advantage of FMLA and STD benefits. They still work there year after year of doing this, and they take advantage of the system very well :(.

Yea, today's a great start to 2008 for us too. Our Unix server which hosts all our invoicing and accounting software lost its motherboard overnight. Hope to be back up by late today, in the meantime, we're back in the stone ages.
