Old thread here to refresh your memory, if necessary.
The owner came over and actually cleaned it to my satisfaction so I could stick my hands inside without blowing chunks.
Turns out the motherboard's IDE controller is dying and giving errors when the hd is accessed. It's a Pentium 233 Compaq.....a piece of junk fit for a doorstop. I was given the computer as payment for diagnosing the problem. The only salvagable piece was a Western DIgital Caviar 40GB 7200 rpm hard drive with 2 years left on warranty....in perfect condition.
The 20X CD-ROM seems functional, but I don't want to see what crawled inside and died......it, along with the rest of the computer, is sitting in the rain on my rear deck. Thinking about plugging it in and watching it short out.
