And they say Vegas is cheap!

Me, the wife, and some friends from college are all planning on going to Vegas this August. While the airfare and hotel stay is fairly inexpensive, shows are insane! it's $200 a ticket minimum to see Cirque de Soliel's "O", $100 to see Blue Man, $140 to see Penn and Teller... crazy!

Anyone got any good show advice for a guy trying to stay above the severe debt marker?

catch the showgirls at bally's, pretty good show. It's probably the last big production you're gonna see in vegas. If your wife don't mind the boobies, it's actually a very decent show. I was very entertained.

Everyone said the O show is the bomb, but when we went there, stupid bellagio had a power outage for 3 days and our show was cancelled :|

Are you sure you're not looking at their VIP ticket prices? It's possible that their ticket rates are seasonal, but orchestra seats should be in the ~$120 range. Yes, it's still incredibly expensive, but I thought the show was worth it.

Their other show, Mystere, should be under $100 per ticket.

Check a website like Citysearch to see who's (non-permanent) in town. The off-strip shows are much cheaper; the last time I was in town, I saw Steven Wright at The Orleans for $40.

I haven't seen "O", but I have seen "Mystere" because in general it got better reviews online. And its cheaper. And its the best show I have ever seen. Period.

The showgirl show at Bally's is extremely entertaining, and they have showings where the tops are on, in case you are with your family or something.

Don't go see Lord of the Dance. It sucks. (<-- take heed, NuclearNed reserves the word "sucks" only for special occasions where the word is truly merited)

The only other one I have seen is Siegried & Roy, which is closed for now.

The name headliners are going to rip you off. They do not even provide discounts for us locals.

The Hilton has shows that the locals can get a discount on.

As others stated, the off-strip casinos will have shows at much better prices

Vegas USED to be cheap. Then they threw the mob out and tried to make the place a "family friendly" place.

If you want a slight taste of the feeling of old Vegas, stay downtown and stay off the strip.

Vegas ain't what it used to be. Not by a long shot. :|

This all may be true, but still there are few places I'd rather be.

Its not so family friendly any more because two many properties got there @ss handed to them by gaming control with some serious fines and it did hurt the bottom line. Now Vegas is marketed for mid week conventions and the south CA weekend playground. As for the poster question, Jubilie at Bally's starts 35$ for weekday and 48$ on the weekend. I agree that ticket prices are through the roof but its not the Hotel profiting from them. Blame the production company and artist manangment.

Oh, I know they are trying to undo the damage that started in the early eighties and ran all the way through the ninties. The problem is, they have left the family friendly pricing scheme in place. Back before all this the only things that cost any real money in Vegas was the gambling and the girls. Everything else was virtually free or damn cheap. Now buffets are $40-60, shows are $100-300 and rooms are extremely expensive.

When I first went to Vegas in the early eighties I could get a demi suite at the original MGM for under $30 a night. Try to get anything on the strip at an upper end hotel for that now. Prime Rib Buffets at the higher end hotels were $5 or under. Most shows could be seen for free with coupons.

It doesn't matter that they are trying to stear away from the family friendly image. Until they change the pricing, the damage is done.

There are at least 2 different discount ticket places in town. One next to the M&Ms building and in the shopping center next to the Harley cafe (or whatever it's called). They get reduced tickets to many of the shows in town. Only problem with the big shows like 'O' or Celine is that they don't always know when they are getting some and they sell out rather fast. Typically, these shows don't even make it up on their board. Go to these around 4 to 5pm and see if they have any. You have to ask since it wont be on the board. They get seats fairly regularly. However, even at a reduced rate, O and Celine will be running you $100 or more because they typically only get VIP seats. Good seats for a price near what you would have paid for regular seats.

Also, Blue Man Group is a waste out there. I'd see Penn and Teller's show 5 times before I paid to see Blue Man Group again. Just my opinion.
