Though I dreaded the thought, I knew I had to force myself to go back to the burned-out pile of debris that used to be our family home. Yes, we had lost everything, but I still had hope that we could rebuild somewhere once I located and recovered the box that we hid in the basement wall so many years ago. That box would make the difference for all of us.
Our neighborhood was unrecognizable. I slipped through the police line that cordoned off the area by waiting until a shift change at 3 AM. I was counting on being able to figure out which charred pile was ours, and removing the box without making enough noise that the patrol would be alerted to my presence.
I never thought I would be happy that our neighbor decided to paint his home lime green last year, but there was just enough left visible for me to pick out his house, therefore knowing ours was the next one on the right. I hid behind a woodpile and waited for the patrol to pass by before starting my recovery effort. My tools: a crowbar and a small Mag-lite. It was all I dared to carry but even so, if I got caught I would be shot for looting before they even asked to see my ID.
Fortune was smiling on me as I saw that the home had collapsed in the other direction, leaving me clear access to the hiding place in the wall. I wouldn't even have to clear any debris, and this greatly improved my chances of getting out without being caught. Pulling out the stone that covered the box, I said a silent prayer of thanks that our box was there.
The box that would give us a new start. The box that held the $200,000 of gold and silver so we could bribe our way past the fence that kept us in Sector R. so we could go where people still could grow food.
I pulled out the box from the hole in the wall, being careful not to drop it from the weight. It was lighter than I remembered.
Too light. Very, very much too light.
I crouched down behind the wall and held the Mag-lite in my mouth, with my heart pounding. Somehow that gold had to be there. It HAD to be. It was the only thing that could save us.
I opened the lid.
And then I found 10 dollars.
