And the XBOX hits the crapper... Suggestions?

I popped in halo a few minutes ago to freshin up a bit for tuesday.

XBOX screen loads, the light stops blinking green and starts blinking red, tells me to get it serviced.

So I took off the top just to check if anything had come loose or something, notta.

Hit power again, and the XBOX screen wont even load.

Suggestions?
 
Just turned a year old.

PS: What kind of screw holds down the harddrive...any easy ways to pop it off?
 
If you end up selling it, let me know. I have never tried repairing one before, but I would like to play around with it and try.

It definatly sounds that way, and I have a maxtor HDD laying around.. guess Ill track down the auto-installer and try that out.
 
Update..


Replaced the retail drive with my own maxtor 250 gig, plugged in the IDE cable/power.
Burned SlaYer's EvoX Auto-Installer v2.6 to a dvd - r
Stuck it in, the light starts blinking red after a few seconds, suggestions?
 
When it told you to get service, do you remember the error number that was displayed?

Since you already put a new drive in, I assume you a modded xbox, either with a chip or softmod. Xbox has to be modified in order to run Slayer's.
 
Ah, I feel like a dumass taco, I had been told that it would work without the xbox previously being moded

If you want to revive it, you should read xbox-scene

Since your HD is dead, I'm not sure if you can do a softmod. You might need to buy a mod chip to get your system working. I'm not sure on that though, I've never done a softmod, so you'll have to read up on it if you want to go that route. I do know that you'll be able to revive your xbox by installing a modchip and a new drive.

One last quick question.
I'm not too up to date with the mod chips, but all I've heard is you can't play live, im assuming that is just with games on your harddrive, but normal games still work on LIVE?
 
You can play live you just get a Chip with a throw switch. If Your xbox is about a year old I'd say its roughly a V1.0-V1.3
Ive owned a V1.0 Killed it modding it 😀
and I've also owned a V1.6 I killed that one also by modding it.
 
LIVE, that's a tricky question. Microsoft has recently been making changes to the things that your xbox checks when it connects to live. There's lots of speculation that about whether MS is check HD serials, sizes, etc. xbox-scene has an Xbox LIVE forum where they discuss this topic ad nauseum.

Previously it was enough to lock your HD and disable your mod-chip to play on LIVE. I'm not clear if that's still the case. There are people with more knowledge about this at xbox-scene, I'm just a dabbler.
 
You need to either

1. buy an unlocked hard drive and install it along with a mod-chip (drive should be around $10 or less on ebay)

or

2. buy a locked hard drive + motherboard combo and replace your hard drive and motherboard. Note, if you're getting a new motherboard make sure you know what version you have and that your power supply will be compatible.

You can get working original HD but it does not mean you can just pop it in your xbox. You have to get a modchip and lock the drive. (make sure you buy a unlocked drive) Then if you want you can remove/disable the modchip and the original bios will work.
