so i'm driving along about about 45 mph in a 40 mph zone so i'm speeding just a tad. and then this car decides to cross the street RIGHT in front of me, it wasn't a 4 way stop, there was NO stop light.

he just ABSOLUTELY did not see me. OMFG, I SLAM on the brakes the Anti lock kicks in a bit and I STOP with just a few inches to spare as he crosses in front of me.

OMFG. I was SOOO FVCKING pissed.

in retrospect i should have just hit him.

Ya but then your insurance would have went up and you would have had to hassle with getting your car repaired :)

Be positive-At least you know your ABS works!

I am in Florida old people do that crap all the time.

Why hit him?? Screw up your car, your insurance goes up (regardless of fault anymore), possible neck/back injury.

WHY??

Take a few deep breaths, catch your composure, pull up alongside and flip the bird, pull in front and then slam on the brakes making him swerve into a ditch! ;)

ya, but he CROSSED the road, he didn't pull out in front, he went perpendicular to me. if i had hit him it would have been MASSIVE damage to his car.

your right of course, i'm better off not having hit him. but OMFG i couldn't believe it.

glad you were able to stop in time. Last wednesday, on a two-lane road I almost hit a car that decided to right-turn into my lane...had to pass him using the other lane.

agreed. if i had been doing like 80 or 90 and he didn't see me in time because of the way the road was, then ok, he has a small excuse, but i was only doing 45 in a 40.

HE SHOULD have seen me, there really was no excuse for what he did. and then HE DIDN'T ACCELLERATE as he crossed the road.

what a fvcking moron. he could have killed that passenger if i hadn't had decent reflexes.

Sigh.. I don't understand why anyone would ever want the trouble / hassle / stress of this no matter who is at fault and who will be getting money back.

as close as it was, if i had been the slightest bit hesitant, or had something momentarily caught my eye, or had i been talking on my cell phone or something, i would have hit him accidently.

there would have been some satisfaction in hitting the ass for driving like an ass.

If you want to do something like that, get yourself a '72 Impala and install a 5-point harness and then it's Demolition Derby time!

The exact same thing happened to me a few months ago, only I was driving a 4Runner and the idiot crossing the road was in a Tercel. If I had hit him, he would most certainly have died. My hands shook all the way home.

actually, even a smaller car hitting the broad side of a larger car will leae the car hit on the broad side with MUCHO damage. cars are designed to take impact at the bumpers better than at the doors. strange thing that.

ya, that would have really sucked because then i probably would have been blamed. hence in that situation i would have been better off hitting the guy in front of me, that way he can't leave the scene and both me and the car behind me would blame him.

I don't think you understand. He crossed in front of me, and I almost hit him square on the driver's side door of his Tercel at 45mph. Trust me, he'd have died. It scares the hell out of me to think about it.

The driver of the Tercel was just as scared when he realized he was about to die. We came so close I could see the whites of his eyes. Poor guy probably had to change his pants when he got home.

actually i do understand, my point was, even if YOU in the larger car had been doing the crossing and the tercel in the smaller car had been headed towards your door, YOU would have been in more trouble than him.

Good point, but in that case most of the impact force would have been at my waist/hip/leg area. In his case it would have been his head/neck/shoulder area.

I'm just thankful I didn't hit him. I bet he was too. :music:

yup.

i guess i wasn't really clear. really the most dangerous thing a driver can do is go cross traffic. getting broadsided is probably as bad as head ons.

it's just the level of stupidity of some of these drivers.

Ok, I call BS on this since no one else has. And even if not, your still a dumbass.

1) You stop with just "a few inches to spare". Come on! WTF are you smoking. Can you even pull up to a parking spot with a wall and know when you are "within a few inches"?

2) Do the math/physics here. How long did it take you to stop (that would tell us how far away you applied the breaks). To be able to come to a COMPLETE stop, a few inches away from the guy, you would have almost had to hit the breaks before he even started pulling out. Most people who dart across the road accelerate pretty quickly. Lets assume that they had to travel the width of your side of the road + the lenght of their car. 25-30 feet? Starting at rest, and accelerating to 15 mph doesnt take that long, and they could probably do that easily. So.. 15mph is 22 feet per second. Divide that by two and assume for constant acceleration, and it would take him maybe 2-3 seconds to cross your lane, or your half of the road.

So what you are telling us is, that you slammed on the brakes, came to a stop from 45mph to 0, within a few inches of his car, AND he still hadn't finished passing in front of you "I STOP with just a few inches to spare as he crosses in front of me.", which should have only taken him 2-3 seconds. So if he was s till in front of you, then all of this happened in 2 seconds (you spotting him, AND stopping in time). Err... thats why I call BS on this. At the very least, you are greatly exaggerating all the details.

3) If you had slammed on the breaks, and barely hit him, you would have been at fault for going 45 mph. Since 5mph slower could have easily allowed you to stop in time. So you acting all bitchy because HE almost caused a wreck, when you going only 5mph over the speed limit brought you "INCHES" away from hitting him. If you had been traveling at the speed limit, it wouldn't have even been a close call. Based on the earlier exaggerations I would assume you were probably going a bit faster too.
