Only place for an auto is in luxury cars that are supposed to remove you from the road anyway. An A8/S-Class/7 series/XJ/Phantom with a manual transmission is kind of pointless, you just want to be able to put your foot down and waft away in a silent rush.
And company cars are probably better off with an auto as well.

I would want an auto in a luxury car, SUV, truck, or mid-sized vehicle. Come to think of it, the only places I'd want a manual is a sports car or compact/subcompact vehicle.
