Great fucking album. Bad mix though.

So true.. what a terrible mix. :(

Can't be as bad as Death Magnetic

Bad in a different way. Death Magnetic sounds distorted from clipping and AJFA sounds like 2 guitars, drums and vocals, almost like a demo recording.

But....but...there are 2 guitars drums and vocals

I think he's implying the bass was essentially muted which I have to believe contributed to Newstead leaving the band. Cliff was a major force in the band prior to his death, and it's like they decided to honor him by removing the instrument from the band.

Well said.

This. Justice's problem was in mixing, DM is brickwall limited and compressed to hell, which is generally a mastering issue (although it was supposedly fried pretty badly by Rubin and Metallica before it ever made it to mastering, according to the mastering engineer.)

For mixing, the band is typically present and actively involved in the process and OK'ing things along with their producer. James and Lars were there, give them at least a share of the blame for Justice's sound.

In mastering, the final mix goes to a mastering house, and they can generate several versions for the band or record label's approval. Somebody as big as Metallica would get the final say on the sound of their album. Blame them for DM as well.
