This is a "developing" story. Apparently, it's been reported that the Army is holding military recruiting "fair" inside the Astrodome.

This is a direct, shameless exploitation of the victims of this disaster in their most vulnerable time of their lives.

Poor, poor taste.

Are you anti-military?
That's exactly the problem...the military is often seen as the only choice to get back on ones feet...and then they come in, tell you a bunch of lies, make you sign a 2 year commitment, send you off to war, and make you stay in the military for longer than 2 years because our president went to war on faulty intelligence. Of course, if you lost your home, your job, have family members missing, and live in a room with ten thousand other people you woudn't feel intruded upon if the military tried to recruit you one hundred feet from your bed...because you can choose to join or not.

how is it shameful?? its a great oppunity for people who have no job, no house, and in their eyes no future to get a job get some training in a specific career and get paid. How is it any different than a corp coming down and doing recruiting?

Military in a time of peace is probably one of the best jobs out there. Free room and board, 3 meals a day, education paid for + benefits.

Even in a time of war it isnt a terrible job. Maybe some of the people who have had their lives ruined will find a steady fullfilling job with the military?

Not like they are going anywhere soon. Sounds like 3-6 months miniumum before you can even set foot in the city.

WHAT?

Apparently you and BBond were separated at birth. He too knows nothing at all about the military, yet spouts off as if he does and embarrasses himself. Before you embarrass yourself more on this particular topic, you should talk to those in the forum with knowledge on the subject, either via PM or on a separate thread for questions and answers.

We have to have a military. Who is going to fill the ranks?

I think the recruiters would disagree vehemently with the OP's remarks. Most of the military establishment too. They aren't clubbing refugees unconscious and dragging them to Iraq. They join voluntarily.

Are you anti-military?

What a stupid f*cking question?

Ever heard of common decency.

I know some of the people on these boards have no common decency, but at least FAKE it once in a while.

WOW you have some temper issues. You could have said 'no, I am not anti-military' and that would have been fine!

I bet you could count the # of refugees who support the Iraqi adventure on one hand.

Oh BS. There's a time and a place to recruit. This isn't one of them.

This is like a loan shark showing up on your door because he heard your mother was in the hospital or something, completely unconscionable.

Owned. As long as it is not them or their kids, they could care less.

They have a captured audience. Might as well take advantage of a bad situation.
It's a job.

But, they shouldn't be doing it *at* the Astrodome, if that's the case. Maybe ask the Red Cross/FEMA if flyers could be posted and they setup something outside.

It reminds me a lot of how lawyers acted after a close family member of mine was involved in an accident that resulted from gross negligance.. While everyone was in a state of mourning and shock, several of them approached other family members like sharks with promises of comfort and justice, while writing contracts that called for 50% of the settlement when the going "rate was 25-30%.

Now I'm not saying their behavior was illegal, but like in this case, it shows a lack of class and professionalism by exploiting people that are down. The military is not doing them a favor because they feel badly for them, they need more recruits to make up for their dwindling numbers.

I'm sorry but a lot of people in the shelters are looking for jobs so they can start to get their lives back (the ones that have come to utah said exactly that on the news). The millitary is a good job for those that want it. Not only do they get an ok wage but the millitary will pay for housing AND healthcare for their families. If I was in their situation I would consider the millitary pretty hard and it's not disrespectful to be offering them jobs.

Are you upset that Customs took all the illegal counterfiet goods they have siezed this year and gave them to the vicitims?

I don't disagree that the military is a good option for many of these people, but the timing is really messed up. At least give these people a few weeks to absorb their new challenges and to make rational decisions.

In a socialist state all these poor people would be put to work improving their own lives instead of being used as cannon fodder. It is irresponsible to allow your neighbor to practice self destruction. Self destruction is not a choice of free will, it is a disease and a compulsion. You are your brothers keeper. It's just that it's so much more convenient to turn your back. So many of those who paid a price are the dirt we swept under the rug.
