And I had such hopes for my new neighbor...

Next year scatter wildflower seeds over there. At least enjoy some variety.

We're those neighbors. The ones that don't kill every living thing in the yard. We've had old men offer to kill our yard for us. The same guys also talk about how many birds we have in our yard not making any connection between native plants and native wildlife. Granted, Sonoran Desert native plants are quite a bit more spectacular than Michigan native plants, but with a bit of well planned neglect your neighbor could have a beautiful native yard. Of course, then their leaves would be all over your lawn. 😛

Good man, sounds like my place except for the desert part :^D

I still don't understand why people worry so much about their lawns. I wish all my grass would die so I wouldn't have to cut it. Yardwork is a depressingly endless time sink.

Exactly how I feel. I detest yard work and would rather just concrete in the entire damn thing.

Do you take care of your car's appearance? It's like having rusted paint, or a huge scratch or dent.

I don't want half my lawn sticking up with yellow weeds. My front yard is 1-year old sod with no weeds. Nice and clean. My backyard is 50% weeds (cause I didn't follow any regimen) and it's uncomfortable just looking back there. It's like an itch that needs to be scratched. I mow it so no weeds show easily but even with clovers & empty patches here and there it just looks like it's sick.

If you prefer a lot of concrete, don't live in the suburbs. City homes have no real lawn to speak of. 😀

Would you like a few million dandelion seeds dropped on your lawn?

i would give exactly zero fucks
they get mowed over 1-2 times a week, i really dont care if they grow inbetween the mowings.

TBH they add a nice amount of contrast

I think you missed the fact that the word weed doesn't mean what you think it does, go find a dictionary.

Weed: A herbaceous plant not valued for use or beauty, growing wild and rank, and regarded as cumbering the ground or hindering the growth of superior vegetation.

Yep, I think Dandelions fit the word week perfectly. :\

Except dandelion leaves and buds are edible, and packed full of vitamins. You can also make dandelion wine from the flowers.

And your point is?

They are not wanted on a grass lawn, hence they are weeds.

Part of the definition you pasted said: "A herbaceous plant not valued for use or beauty"

I was pointing out that dandelions are in fact valued for their use. A lot of people find them nice looking as well. To you dandelions are a weed, to others they are an edible plant with a nice looking flower.

Then again, I wouldn't eat any dandelion growing on a lawn around me given the massive amount of nasty chemicals most people pour on their lawns every year just to maintain their precious grass.

Wow, I'm glad you're not my neighbor 😀

Sorry OP, but having high hopes for most renters is a recipe for disappointment.

(speaking from experience)

I bet your current neighbors love your Dandelion yard 😀

I actually only have maybe 30-40 dandelions. They, along with the rest of what's out there, get mowed every week. I just don't dump all kinds of nasty poisons on them trying to kill them because they don't bother me. By the middle of the summer they are pretty much gone because the grass starts to cover them. From the street my lawn doesn't look much different than anyone else's. I actually had one neighbor walk by while we were out there and he asked what we do to keep our lawn so green. 😀 I don't do anything besides not mowing really short, and not dumping nasty shit everywhere.

"A herbaceous plant not valued for use or beauty, growing wild and rank, and regarded as cumbering the ground or hindering the growth of superior vegetation... Applied to a shrub or tree, especially to a large tree, on account of its abundance in a district... An unprofitable, troublesome, or noxious growth."

Well that proved me right. Thanks for the suggestion.

I have a few dandelions and other assorted weeds (very minimal) in my yard, but it's nowhere near as bad as in the OP. However, they only come up in my yard in early spring and after mowing once a week for a month, they are gone. Given the very warm weather in March, they've already pretty much cleared out by now. At this point, there is nothing outgrowing the grass and there is no yellow to be seen.

So this is what happens when a forum gets old; the members argue about lawn care.

In 10 years everyone will hate weeds and we'll be arguing about the best way to yell at the kids to get off our lawn and which cane is the best to shake at them

Get some roundup and spray a giant cock & balls on their lawn, they'll have a nice surprise in a week or two. That'll show em.
