I would reword that, as, "This church has decided to stick with the patriarchal, misogynistic, homophobic hate talk...". Many religions worldwide have had major issue with homosexuality for a long time, if not always. But this pastor and his congregation are a bit on the extreme end of it, to be fair to other denominations.

I did find the 2nd half of your post an interesting posit...I could definitely see that unfolding as you say. Who knows, people's shame and humiliation can do funny things, turn to anger, retribution, etc.

My wife has an odd branch of her family that are pretty Catholic and I've been to a few weddings and funerals with them and they seem pretty chill with the fire and brimstone tbh. Their defining things in common is that they all have loads of kids and start young, they all smoke and they all drink a lot. Tbh the weddings are pretty fun.
