You can still keep your own directories, and make drag and drop playlists directly within iTunes. But whatever floats your boat.

Yeah not saying it is crap or anything. Looks good but I like my winamp setup and it is takes up a small area on my screen with the playlist up. And I can't be bothered to switch about so far. May do it when I can be bothered  lol.

Yeah, the good thing about all the choice out there is that it's mostly free (incl. iTunes). Choice and free rule. :)

Is it better to rip songs to mp3 or AAC (m4a)? Also I have a portable cd player that plays mp3's, but will it also play these AAC files or is it completely different?

I guess you can't have everything with (effectively) a version 1.0 release. Maybe they'll add it later.
I'd be surprised if it was 3D accelerated via OpenGL on the PC. Can you imagine the headaches from people using sub-par graphics hardware trying to run visualizations, especially if OpenGL isn't installed by default?
OK then how about Direct3D 7 or something?

They could always have a software version like now, with the option for D3D. Or else just speed up the damn visualizations in software. SSE? Here's hoping for iTunes for Windows 5.0.

That might work, but if it's true, and parts of the Cocca runtime have been ported to Windows, then working in a D3D interface would be very difficult.

Not that many players play AAC yet. They include the iPod (of course) and some others like the ones from Panasonic. If yours doesn't say AAC, then it doesn't support AAC. AAC is good for store purchases, but for personal rips I like MP3 better - more portable.

Even though the files are big, I think it's OK. With 10 GB for my 3G iPod, I can still stick tons upon tons of songs on even with my great big MP3 files (256 Mbps MP3 CBR). And these iPods get up to 40 GB.

AAC would save me space, but I'd probably be ripping at 224 anyway with AAC so it's not as if I'd be saving a huge amount of space.

Well, not everyone is going to be enamoured with it, but it grows on you. The networking, the integrated CD burning, the ease of use and organization, the store, etc. It can't hurt to play with it for a little while, since it's free. If you end up not liking it much then fine, but hey, it's free. You can always just uninstall it.

All the computers' WMP are set to monitor the music directory and their respective libraries are updated automatically. Then I can sort in the library by artist, album, genre, whatever.

So all your CD's are encoded into a windows only, DRM-enabled format?

And you brag about this?

So far, I like the new MusicMatch Jukebox 8.1 better. I also would like to see what will the new Napster bring to the table.

I don't think anybody can beat Apple's MusicStore at .99/song

Both MM Jukebox and Napster will offer individual tracks at .99/song. Napster is also giving 5 free tracks for preregistering. :)

It is worth noting that napster's offerings will be offered in DRM-loaded WMA format only. Anyone with an iPod (the best mp3 player on the market, ATM) won't be interested. I've always considered MMJ a big pile of steaming %&#$%@, so I'm not sure what their format will be.

You can buy tracks for $0.99 from foobar? You do know this is the major reason for iTunes, right? ;)

Has anyone else experienced skipping music while switching focus from and to ITune? I have stuff running in the background, but I still have about 75% cpu, and switching window focuses causes music to skip occassionally. I've never had skipping music using winamp or foobar. Could it be because ITune is more cpu intensive, or just coded inefficiently...?

But ITune is growing on me. I just feel it is intuitive to use, and does a very good job of keeping a music library, plus it should integrate well with my g3 ipod, although I haven't tried it yet.

Slashdot loves iTunes for Windows

Steve Jobs claims that iTunes is the best software ever written for Windows. It's certainly the best music player/Jukebox ever written for Windows. I don't know that any of the others can match it, feature for feature.

With iTunes and the iTunes Music Store, I honestly can't see myself returning to buying CDs. It's just so much more convenient, and significantly cheaper to download and burn - and I don't care about the minor quality differences or the lack of cover art. This is what I've been waiting for. YMMV of course, but it's definitely worth a try.

Well, that's interesting... The new Winamp 5 beta defaults to encode in AAC format.

MP3 is a paid upgrade. It will not encode to WMA.

It will be free.

There will be a regular free version and a Pro version that will allow you to encode MP3s. There are license fees for MP3 Encoders which someone has to pay.

And AAC(a more advanced codec) is somehow free? Apple's going to absolutely own the CD ripping market; there's no way most people are even going to consider paying for CD ripping, or for Winamp.

It looks like akamai is doing well for Apple. Downloads remain fast despite the fact that they're getting hammered for downloads for iTunes.

The article also says that 1 million songs have been sold as well during that time period, although that includes both Windows and Macs users.

Wow, that's a lotta downloads. It has remained fast too. I've bought two albums already, and they downloaded quickly.
