And another U.S. Senator steps in it by praising Bin-Laden...

"He's been out in these countries for decades, building schools, building roads, building infrastructure, building day care facilities, building health care facilities, and the people are extremely grateful. We haven't done that.

He does that so he can see how to attack them. Duh.

A curious historical precedent: Before Christianity became the Official religion of the Roman Empire, the power of Christianity grew as the Christians fed, clothed, and provided other Social assistance to the poor. Eventually Christianity was held in such high regard in Rome that it was inevitable that the persecution and attempted eradication had to be stopped. Constantine recognized this power and was able to use it to secure himself as Emperor.

The biggest problem with US Foriegn Aid is that it is primarily the supply of military equipment. I think the Senator was trying to point out that more constructive and less destructive Aid would benefit the US's reputation around the world.

In other words you want to buy love.

It's called prostitution.

I guess all those billions of dollars of foreign aid, military help, etc was nothing...

that's not praise... she's just giving them reasons of why he might be popular with the people there.

Even though i dont' always agree with gopunk, i respect his rational, cool headed thinking. I agree with him on this. So many people on this board jump to conclusions and get all riled up for nothing.

We don't? Here we have a state senator telling our young, impressionable minds in high school that we haven't been building roads, schools, etc, or helping anyone out.

WTF?

no she was saying that she can UNDERSTAND why he has some supporters. Many of them live poor, miserable lives. Here comes the rich arab who throws money around, builds hospitals, schools, and roads, and they start to like him. She is saying we didn't do these things. I think this was in reference to Afghanistan. We had made promises to rebuild that country after the soviets left, but we did'nt do it. i don't think anyone of us is saying he is a good man, we all hate him. But we are saying that what she said in no way SUPPORTS the man. gotta read that stuff carefully.

well, she might be wrong (i really wouldn't know), but i don't think that we can say she is supporting bin laden just because we think she is misinformed. unless you think she is deliberately telling lies... in which case, you might just be a conspiracy theorist.

I'm not even sure you have to read it all that carefully. Its basic reading comprehension 101, she didn't praise anyone, only offered a deeper understanding of the facts...something many are too shallow to wish to know about.

What she's saying is that if someone uses their resources to support poorer people in need, they might be appreciated by those people. Not that we'd ever want to take that approach instead of the false PR/propoganda efforts that the administration and military would rather take.

I hadn't heard that the US promised to rebuild the country after the Soviets left. Do you have any documentation to support that?

I'm sure i can find it for you. give me a few minutes.

I for one applaud her courage to deviate from official party lines. At least she understands WHY people in many Islamic countries hate us and love Bin Laden. Why do you think that she is praising Bin Laden? Is it because she acknowledges that Al-Qaeda has done something which could in some context be seen as positive, thus negating the whole black and white argument from the US Government that USA = good, Al-Qaeda = bad? Don't get me wrong, I'd love to see Bin Laden burn in hell for murdering thousands of innocent Americans, but we must understand that there are *reasons* for American hatred around the world. It is too bad that the Republican government instead tries to oversimplify the issue in order to justify their "War on Terror".

He did all that? Gee I wonder why so many want to leave the country. I guess they just couldn't handle progress.

Since he did so much, perharps the senator should pack her bag and move to wherever Bin laden is.
It is so sad that americans do not appreciate this great country. Movie actors for example, trash america while continuing to enjoy the benefits of this great country. Remarks like the one made by the senator would've landed her in jail under Bin ladin.

My feeling is that you don't like it here, leave the country. Otherwise, quit trashing america.

do you really think she was praising bin laden? or could it be... just maybe... that she was just trying to give some reasons why bin laden might be popular?

How about when the US stepped in to help the ethnic Albanians, free Kuwait, stopped genocide in Bosnia, pour millions of dollars into Palestinian refugee camps over the years through the UN (more than any other Arab countries), give 4.5 billions dollars to Egypt every year, etc. Yeah, we're building school for BOTH boys and girls in Afghanistan.

Damn, St Nick came early, and he obviously went around hitting everyone with a Stupid Stick!

[just woke up and need caffeine]Merry Fargin Xmas Eve, eh![/goes now]

😀

There's nothing wrong being open-minded and seeing the big picture, sounds like there is a lot of ethnocentric thinking post-911 and Murray seems to be doing something good to remedy it.

Hey, just saw this post... my Alma Mater! 😛 (seriously)

Patty Murray is a pretty good Senator for a Dem. I (like everyone else here) saw no praise for Bin Laden. She's merely asking people to look at the issue intellectually instead of emotionally, something I always approve of.
