LONDON ? So maybe Mark Antony loved Cleopatra for her mind.

That is the conclusion being drawn by academics at Britain's University of Newcastle from a Roman denarius coin which depicts the celebrated queen of Egypt as a sharp-nosed, thin-lipped woman with a protruding chin.

In short, a fair match for the hook-nosed, thick-necked Mark Antony on the other side of the coin, which went on public display Wednesday at the university's Shefton Museum.

That is not the first time i heard that. Other shows i have seen on the History Channel or Discovery, said that she was not beautiful, but was very "sensual" and smart. That is what made her attractive.

So we are to believe that a 2000 year old coin has an accurate representation of a Greek woman on it?

Same here, I think something was said about it on Digging for the Truth on The History Channel.

You're implying that coin production was as precise 2000 years ago as it was 80 years ago?

If she was indeed unremarkable how come she has managed to intrigue up to this day?

Thats a little different. We have many other paintings of Washington that were done by multiple artists, not to mention far better coin minting technology.

In Cleopatra's case, all the representations of her are ancient stone carvings and minted coins, all of which have been weathered by time.

Don't know your history, do you?

She was Greek there buddy. :p Her parents were both from Macedonia, a Greek nation. She spoke Greek and was raised in Greek culture. Reportedly, she was also the first member of the Egyptian ruling family in 300 years to have learn the Egyptian language as a second language.

That caused me to look her up - thanks! I also (wrongly) assumed she was of Egyptian origin.

That is one ugly woman but I'd still hit royalty :p

I know my history just fine, I was responding to uhohs being confused over my "Greek Woman" comment.

She was the last ruler of the Ptolemaic Dynasty.
