I am taking a class in Dreamweaver. I have html background and I am willing to learn. I have about a hand full of people who will pay me to build them a website. How much do you charge for something like that? Charge by the hour or by the site? Or maybe by the page? How about taking care of the website? How much to keep it current for them? I assume that would have to be by the hour? Any feedback would be appreciated.

Wait a second...........I am not asking to have my work graded. I dont have anything up on the web right now. I am not asking for your opinion on the website that I build. I know that you guys started out with 25 years experience with html, java, etc. I know that you are the best and I am not worthy. I know people who have had no formal training in website design and make an extra 10k a year doing it. I am basically a newbie who wants to try something new. I enjoyed html and think it would be fun. I am asking, knowing that I have little experience, How do you charge people? By the hour? Page? How about for administering there site? I would think that you would charge by the hour for that? What are you guys making? I dont plan on starting to get into this charging top dollar! It sure would be nice to know that someone that has 5 yrs experience is making $xx or someone with a year is making $xx. I know I have a long ways to go. I know it will take time. If you can answer those questions for me, I would appreciate it. If you cant, maybe someday I will post a link to my sites so that you can sit and nit pick away. When I am at that point I will post that question.

I dont think the point was to criticize you, but rather to offer some rates based on the quality of your work so far.

You can charge either by the page or by the hour, depends on your preference.

As a reference, I made a page with about 6 seperate pages and charged just over 700 bucks, which was a deal, since the lowest they could find was close to a thousand at the time.

I'm also interested in some answers to the question. I make websites for friends and family for free (so far)... but boy howdy would I enjoy having some extra $$ on the side for doing something I consider a hobby.

And what do you guys know that you can tell me what I can charge for a web page where I live? I did about half of the site www.sexinc.net
This was over a year ago and my roomy that I worked on the site with has passed since then. Eric has been taking care of this site for about a year. That site was about half me and half my roommate. It was for his business so there were no charges involved.

/me nods. I asked for a sample for that point exactly... if your making pages that look like this: supergreg, you shouldnt be getting paid the same amount as say, people making pages that look like this: 2advanced

Hourly is usually how people charge. You give an estimation on how long you think it'll take to build out a site... (eg 40 hours for a simple site) and charge accordingly ($10 an hour for a noob is probably decent) if it goes over time? suck it up and dont charge, its your job to judge how long it'll take. make sure you go through the initial design/approval stage, get contracts... all that fun stuff.

sorry for trying to help, I'll know not to the next time.
