Anarchy Online out today. I would advise you to wait at least a week before purchasing

Hey all, I was a Beta 4 tester in AO, and it just came out today. The servers for the registration, patching, and the live server are all totally overloaded, and have been going up and down all day. There are some pretty mean bugs that haven't been sorted out yet either, so I would advise that if you wanna play, you wait at least a week before you buy it. In my opinion is a lot better than all the other MMORPG's out right now. Great graphics, storyline, and gameplay. You get a free month if you purchase the game, and then instead of $10 a month, they set a new standard lol. $13 a month now for AO

From what I've been reading it may take more than a week to resolve all the important issues. I'd say at least a month or more. Be curious to see if the ma$$e$ will submit to paying $13 to play this game.

i hope all those ppl that are on the verge of leaving Everquest to go to AO, will do so today and make my server a lot less crowded! 😀

What?! a month to resolve their log-in issues etc? holy crap, thats even worse then EQ had it on opening day 🙁

/cry
/sigh
/shrugs

This game looks pretty cool, but I really dont get it. What do you do in it, is it alot of fighting, what happens when you die, etc? And it is only on one big server, or can you set up your own? Thanks

I've been playing today & it was TOO bad. It crashed twice in in about 6 hours of playing. I'm not sure it is ready for release, but it is certainly playable. I didnt play the beta, so I am still learning the ropes. It should be a lot of fun once learn what everything actually does.

Opening day blues, eh? It was bound to happen. You have better odds of bedding a supermodel than experiencing a clean opening day in a new online game.

<< What?! a month to resolve their log-in issues etc? holy crap, thats even worse then EQ had it on opening day 🙁 >>

I think they'll be able to resolve it alot sooner than that. The first week is always the harshest on an online game due to the influx of thousands of players. IIRC, EQ wasn't even playable for the first few days. It was so bad the first few weeks that Verant added 10 more free days to players' 30 day trial period.

Yah, there is a lot of crashing. It was even worse in beta. Crashing 5 times in 15 minutes is not uncommon. Well anyway, to tell you about the game, unlike EQ, you don't have to retrieve your corpse anymore. All your stuff comes back in 60 seconds in a terminal. You can go on missions, that you pick from a terminal. As of now, there about 10 different types of missions. They are randomized. There is one central server that holds everyone. They have tons of mini servers that control different zones on the server, so its not like they only have one huge server. You definitely cannot make your own server.

Last night i managed to play for about 2 1/2 hours. 1hr -server crash- then another 1 1/2 hours of play time...

Fun little game...

The camera views will take some getting used to, but the gameplay was really cool.
Tried 1 medium difficulty mission-(for a lvl 2 that is), got stomped on by some assassin. lol...

Sure waiting would be the wise thing to do, but it's fun why wait... lol...

I finally got all the patches d/led at about 11pm(EST) last night and was on for 2 hours straight. About eight of us grouped up together in the newbie area and i was at level 5 in those 2 hours. They gotta do something about the way experience is shared when in a group. We all split up and fought different monsters, quite far away from each other, and every time anyone of us killed something, everyone got experience for it. Pretty cool for powerleveling, but I can't see them keeping it this way for long.

it seems like it takes about a month or 2 after launch for all these MMORPG's to get working just because the developers can do a beta, but they can never really know what its like until their servers get stressed with real life use from the retail game. If they do as good of a job as Verant did, they should have most of the major kinks worked out in a couple months.

I'll never pay more than 10 bucks a month for a game though, and don't need to pay that much because of Tribes 2, CS, Diablo 2, Rogue Spear, Madden, all offer a GREAT online game for zippo.

i want it. i decided. time to render my life useless.

do stores cary it? (compusa? best buy?) or will i have to order online?

Purchsed mine at Best Buy last night.
Also heard stories that CompUSA and EB have it...

Diablo2 expansion was also at Best Buy last night. 🙂

Bunker, I doubt they will change the way EXP is split up. See, in the newbie area where 8 people can group and all fight different things it rocks. But when you get out in the real world around level 20 or maybe 30, you can't pull those same techniques. I used that technique to get to level 7 fast, then we would get groups of 6 fighting 1 or maybe 2 monsters at a time from level 7 to 19. So it is almost like a big bonus in the low levels for making friends and grouping. Just enjoy it and don't expect it to continue being that easy.

Yeah...leveling in groups is SOOOO much faster. Once, I got a decent group together, I went from level 2 to 6 in no time flat. You have to leave the newbie area after level 6 since you only get 1 exp. point per kill then. It seems even more difficult to find people to team with in the city (Tir)....everyone is just wonderig around aimlessly. 😛

...all this talk about leveling might make go get it sooner, rather than later 🙂

Vampirrella, you sound like you love EQ as much as I did 😉 You playing it? Graphics better? gameplay? talk to me 🙂 ...and if anyone has some nice websites with the classes/race/etc, or tips on starting a character, please post them!

Is there like an EQ shaman-type of character? one with a little mojo, some healing, some warrior skils, etc?

I'm still waiting for my online order to arrive. Worst thing is I'm off tonight and tomorrow night. I may have to make a trip to CompUSA...

I've had it for 2 days now, and I'm not too impressed with it. On the first day, the game was buggy and unplayable to the point that after you downloaded a patch, you would find out that a new version of the game had been released in the meantime. Today it's not much better, with the servers being down for much of the day.

When the servers are up, you can play for about 10 minutes until they crash or the Anarchy Online folks tell you that they're shutting them down for "maintenence". The gameplay consists of building up an unnecessarily complex skills system; and the newbie levels make EQ's newbie "RatQuest" seem exciting.

The game might eventually be playable, perhaps even fun if they do manage to fix it (which might months or even years, judging by the current lack of playability). Save your cash, and wait for EQ2 or something :disgust:

PS: Even though EQ had troubles in its first few months (OK, it's first few years 😛 ), even it was never this unplayable at any point during its commercial release. Anarchy Online just makes you feel like you've been cheated :disgust:

I must admit that each time the game crashes for no reason & the "bug report" email form comes up, most of my messages have contained the phrases "go screw yourself" or "give me my money back," but...oh well. 😛

Although, I DO think they should have waited a little longer so they could have been better prepared, but I am sure some things you just can't predict until you have thousands of people on there at once. Maybe they needed to have a completely open beta test for 2-3 weeks instead of restricting it until the end. As for the game itself, it DOES seem as though the skills system is overly complex, however, it remains to be seen how much it will actually come into play...if the different breeds & 12 different professions REALLY DO diversify the play of the game (can't really tell that from low-level characters only), then it could be incredibly interesting. Also the vastness of the world itself & the introduction of individualized missions makes for MANY different playing options. The first day, I did some leveling. Today, I just spent hours wandering around, exploring different areas & seeing what sorts of shops & missions were available. After several hours, I had barely even covered the tiniest little part of the overall game-map. You could probably travel for months & months withougt seeing everything.

My one big gripe about the game itself is that I really hate the communications system. It is WAY too complex. It is difficult to talk to the people you want to talk to withough switching various options around & they may not be able to hear you anyway depending on who they choose to listen to. It would also be nice to see if people are already on a team & WHO is on that team.

Wrong. The first couple weeks EQ was down almost exclusively, thus the reason they gave most of the early birds extra weeks (me being one of them). You are judging AO based on 2 days and saying it needs years worth of work, that is a poor judgement call. I played the beta and if anything they are just fighting with server hardware due to the influx of people. Give it a week and no doubt they will have more hardware and the servers will be fine.
