So the reason everyone has been ignoring the existence of the Ti4200 (aside from Tom's) is because it won't be out for 8 more weeks? Lame. :|

...great review though.

nice read. has that good ol' informative AT feel to it.

and anand also persistently talks about the decrease in performance of the radeon 8500s due to the latest beta driver release. that's good. at least he doesn't try to rule out the radeon.

Nice review. I always like the way AT always talks about why should one buy any of the cards rather than just talk about the tech marvels of the cards.

Reading it now. I love the benchmark suite Anand uses. He is clearly impressed with the GF4. I personally, am very disappointed (so far) in the GF4 MX, and truthfully, as long as the GF3 Ti200 stays on the shelves, and with the Ti 4200 on the horizion, I really think it's gonna be difficult to recommend the GF4 MX.

Looks like there'll be a Ti4600 with my name on it real soon!;) I just hope Elsa comes out with one quickly.........have a Ti500 V/T and a Ti500 921 Elsa and the Elsa, as usual, is a much better card.............:)

"The GeForce4 Ti 4200 is the perfect example of a product that would have never seen the light of day had it not been for competition from ATI, which clearly reiterates the point that competition definitely helps an industry, especially when it's competition between two capable firms such as ATI and NVIDIA. "

That's what I'm sayin', Anand

excellent review; I'm always impressed with his benchmark suite. None of this "just 3dmark and quake3 stuff" :)

<< From the standpoint of the competition, ATI seems relatively unimpressed with the GeForce4's specifications from what we've heard. Whether or not this means that the supposed R300 core is just that much better is up for speculation... >>

That would be nice...but I doubt it...

so far from what I've read I am unimpressed. More cards to sell 'on hype'

I'd rather pay $299 Xbox than pay $399 for another videocard. And if this is what GF4 offers in FSAA quality then it is really worse than the GF3. GF3 images are way superior in the the 2x and QCAA to those of the 4600, unless there is something wrong with the test set up. Even the reviewer commented that FSAA to him looks better on the TI 500, and you'd have to be blind not to see the difference. I think I'll wait this one out.

somethimes the Ti500 is 100% better than the original Geforce 3 ?!?!

that is very odd.

Judging by the relative performance of other benchmarks, perhaps on pages 13 & 14 the underclocked GF4 (240/500) was accidently mislabeled as the GF3 Ti-500. Because the relative performance would match up perfectly then.

The GeForce4 continues to illustrate why it's truly a card built for the future.

Too bad most games are built for the past.

And I don't get all the fuss about fsaa; at 1280x1024 and above I don't notice enough jaggies worth mentioning. Certainly not enough to justify the performance hit.

From the standpoint of the competition, ATI seems relatively unimpressed with the GeForce4's specifications from what we've heard

LOL, what are they supposed to say..."We quit! We can't beat that card!"

Then again, that's what 3DFX said, maybe I shouldn't joke. The last thing in the world I want is a one-company graphics card monopoly. We'll all be using GeForce4's for the next 10 years and the only changes will be what color the PCB will be this year *shudder*.

Looks like 3dgpu.com, made some type of mistake when they did those.

This is good news for Geforce4 Ti4200 to be released at $199 since my Geforce2 GTS died miserably last week.
However, I will now have to put up with a S3Virge 2D card + voodoo2 for another 8 weeks!!

Gomce: I noticed that too. There's no way a GF3 Ti 500 should be that much faster than an original GF3. I wonder whether Anand was using a different driver revision?

Isent that what they said about the GF3?, ATI has been all talk lately. Their 8500 card is pretty nice, but not close to what they "said" it would be. I'll definantly be picking up an 8500 if the price comes down on it due to all these new GF4 cards, thats just an unbeatable deal.

Nice review! It was more enjoyable than Tom's. My only nitpick is Anand's "passive voice" writing style. Use more active voice, Anand! (Actually don't fret too much. I'm guilty of it, too, and I even end my sentences with prepositions a lot). ;)

The GF4 improvements aren't earth-shattering but there's enough there to get excited. It's good to see prices hasn't gone up even more. I notice there are hardly any complaints about GF4 pricing here in the forums. I guess nvidia has finally conditioned us to believe $300-$400 is fine and dandy. This is much difference than the GF3 era where every third post was, "I'm not paying $400 for a video card!". And an eight week wait for the reasonably priced 4200? Tsk, tsk.
