Quick question; What mobo are you using now, PieDerro? Why not slap a Celeron2 in it for a while? $100 investment would put you at least at a stable 800MHz. Not good enough?

OK heres what I think will give you the best performance:

2 * P3 700@933 or 2 * P3 650@866(cb0/FCPGA of course)
2 * FCPGA Golden Orbs
2 * Abit SlotketIII
Tyan Tiger 100 Motherboard@133mhz(BX133 is still the best memory performer and still kicks the crap out of Intels other chipsets)
2 * 128MB EMS HSDRAM
IBM Deskstar 75GXP(as much as you need)
16X Pioneer DVD Drive
TDK VeloCD CDRW(if you want a CDRW)
Hercules 3D Prophet II 64Mb
Sound Blaster Live! MP3+/X-Gamer
RealMagic Hollywood Plus 98 DVD decoder
Netgear/3com/Linksys 10/100mbs NIC
3com Internet Gaming Modem PCI or Hardware ISA modem
Microsoft/Logitech USb mouse
Microsoft Internet Keyboard Pro or Natural Pro
Addtronics 6890a/7890a OR Tornado 1000/2000 case
Enermax/PC Power and Cooling Power supply 300w+
Windows 2000 Pro Edition

This system should give you awesome performance and stabilty care of the BX chipset and Windows 2k however at a cost. This is essentially the system I will be building in a month or so with the exception of the hard drive(I'll be using a Maxtor DM+40 which I have in my current comp). This thing is gonna be fast cant wait to build and good luck with your new system!!

oops missed the bit about US $1450. This system will defintely go over that but I think it will be worth the extra dough. This thing WILL last🙂

Hehe, I think this whole Intel vs. AMD has chased PieDerro away.... Who really cares which chip maker is better? I am happy with both AMD and Intel and the dropping prices of chips. Long live competition.

G'day guys!! Thanks for all the input (and the classic Intel vs AMD debate)

Frankly, I think Intel and AMD are virtually on a par at the moment, and the only reason I wanted to go with an Intel system is that since it is my last year of High School, I don't want to have to waste the time I dont have on resolving conflicts and updating drivers.

For reference, my current system is pretty much non-upgradable, as it is an early Gigabyte BXC mobo with NO SUPPORT for Cumine or Celermine processors. Also, high quality RAM is VERY hard to get in Australia, and decent cooling (aka Golden Orb) is non-existent here!!

I appreciate the advice for the Duron processors, and if I wasnt so busy, Id probably get one, or a Thunderbird and fiddle around with it. Also, here in Australia, it could be a few more months before we start to see volume T-birds and Socket A mobos appearing.

Once again, thanks for your input!! 🙂

P.S. Feel free to add to this thread, as I have not yet bought the system, but am likely to buy within the next fortnight.
