AnandTech News gets a face lift...

Along with the asthetic changes the AnandTech frontpage has gone through (which includes moving the news to the frontpage), the news team is taking this week to do a little upgrade on its format. We are going to be trying to incorportate more news content along with our usual updates on news across the web.

Some of the things we will be incorporating into the new format are:

**Hot Deal of The Day** - One select deal from the hot deals forum per day. Hopefully we can share the wealth with the rest of the 'net who doesn't browse the forum.

**Forum Thread of the Day** - We will try to pick a favorite thread for the day. This can be anything cool, from Highly Technical to Off Topic.

**Good Morning** - The Good Morning post will make a comeback! This will be a little bit of an update on what is going on behind the scenes at AnandTech. Hopefully we will be able to give everyone a small gimpse into what is going on with the AT Team everyday.

We have already picked up two new news team members: I am the new news team coordinator (read news team member with the most time on his hands), and I'm sure most of you already know the esteemed Adul. Brandon and Kiran are still in the trenches as the veteran members of the news team.

Colored quotes rather than Italics! ... Well, that pretty much says it all...

I really hope you guys enjoy the new format and content. I, for one, am really excited about the direction we are headed, and I look forward to serving the community well. Please, feel free to send me an email any time if you have a suggestion about what we can do to keep making AnandTech News the best it can be.

I'll interrupt this love-fest with a few mixed comments: I like the colored quotes and the revised frontpage, but... I've the following comments on the news pages....

I -really- miss the previous style's two dated-columns of news-titles at the top: in the morning I used to be able to see what late-news I missed on the previous day; now I have to page onto yesterday's news each day. Having two days also made it easier when I returned from a trip: I could scan two days of news-titles on each page I pulled up -- meaning I had to pull up only half the pages.

I also find the font on the right-hand-side news-titles to be too small for fast reading. Yeah, I could change my screen resolution, but it's not a problem elsewhere. Or, maybe I could reduce my age by 20 years to improve my eyesight.


I suggest the following changes to the news pages:
In the right-hand column: put more than one day of news-titles; separate those days with a date-heading; use a bolder or larger font.
In the news articles: change the title line from gray to black so the titles stand out better as we scan down the page; switch the bold-black posted-by and date fonts to a gray (or unbold them) as I doubt they are stand-out details most readers.


Keep up the great work! You remain the best news source out there....

Agreed, although I think its a small price to pay for finally getting NEWS back on the front page! (edit: I also noticed that there ARE two days worth of news fully-showing on the front page, so for me, that makes this a bit of a moot point)

Oh man, did I miss this feature. I really love 99% of the new formatting, especially front page news (but still keeping the latest Anand content firmly at the top, in focus), I finally found out about the "print this article" link (ahhh), this is pretty much the perfect site for my tech needs... thanks for the slick update, it seems like the crew there really does listen to feedback, and very well, I might add.

I second Basilisk's remarks. While I can customize font size in the forums, the front page (and other editorial pages?) does not use the same profile. On my notebook with a 1400x1050 screen, the type is waaaay too small to read comfortably, and changing IE's view..textsize setting has no effect. Please fix!

Edit: Interestingly, some of the news items display in a nicely readable font. For example, the 2/21 ExtremeTech IDF item is in a different size than the one right below it (MSI K7N2 mobo item), which is in the too-small size like most of the other items.

Thats a really odd thing to have going on kaborka... I'll look into the font issues, but for now there is something you can do in IE to help --

Tools->Internet Options
-- click the Accessibilty... button near the bottom right. (Its in the General tab page).
-- check the ignore font styles and sizes boxes
-- go back to the Fonts dialog and pick your fonts ...

I tried this and was able to get the font of the news content to change. You do have to sacrifice everything else changing to the one font you specify unless you uncheck those boxes again...

But like I said -- I'll look into it.
