I used to think i will have no need for more then 4gb of ram till just this week,BF3 ultra 1080p my system usage went over 4gb and i had only the game and the essential tools for monitoring open and one browser tab.

Damn glad i went with 8gb.:thumbsup:

In all seriousness, I do think that we're getting to a point that more RAM is useless for the average consumer. If you look at the current situation, 4GB of RAM has been enough for normal tasks for around three years since it became mainstream. Windows 8 will not change this, either.

From reading this thread, it sounds like most of you would also add "and 4 cores ought to be enough for anybody."

I would never confuse AT with MaxPC or even [H], but doesn't anybody around here believe in having more just for the sake of having more? Where's your adventurous spirit, for godssakes?

Or the guy that buys 7970 Xfire for a 1080p display.

You can keep it my friend my wallets thanks me for having little more common sense!

And 4 cores is enough for common desktop usage and games which is what was implied everyone knows once you leave the desktop space it changes.

I'm waiting for 8gb sticks to become cheaper. It would be lovely to create a ram disk for the pagefile, temp folders or some other virtual use.

You don't have more common sense then anyone, you just chose not to buy a 7970 or extreme edition chip. I've never understood this holler than thou attitude people have around here. Its like you have to justify not buying able to buy something by putting down people that can.

It's called cognitive dissonance, and what you are describing is viewed to be a natural part of the process in which the psyche attempts to reduce the perceived value of something that cannot be easily obtained.

You will see plenty cognitive dissonance in these forums, it gets referred to as "jealousy" in laymen garb and the process of doing it comes by way of denigrating the high-end gear as "e-peen".

Cognitive dissonance occurs in practically every consumer market that involves tiered pricing segmentation, its an unavoidable reality of the human psyche.​

I have been doing a number of 16GB ram builds lately. Why? It's so freaking cheap. And if you have to RMA kit, you get to actually still use your PC, it's like insurance.

And? BECAUSE WE CAN. w00t!

I've never met someone who was bummed that they bought too much ram for their PC...

As far as CPUs go, I married a woman who has more sense than myself, and to continue to earn her respect I restrain myself 😛

If Haswell doesn't look that awesome, I may actually go IVB-E. We'll see.

Even if Haswell had the same IPC as IB on legacy code (which is wont), the new instructions and other enchancements (and IGP) alone would make it worth the upgrade in my opinion.

Oh, it's likely. I would like 6+ cores at or less than 95W.

The IGP holds little to no interest for me, personally. For what I do with integrated graphics, the current options are fine.

Now, I may be interested in them on behalf of others, though 🙂 We'll see. Trinity is more exciting for me in that regard.

I am seriously thinking of building my own blade type chassis for Trinity and OpenCL computing, depending on how it performs, but if we get ~35W TDP desktop variants with full GPUs it will be on like donkey kong. I just have to research what it will take to split a PSU over multiple motherboards 😛 Darn, this appears not trivial. I'd really like to use one beefy unit and get it into the effeciency sweet spot rather than shell out for 4-6 PSUs and have all the losses and inefficiencies gained thereby.

so was I. then I ran perf mon and saw I have 1gb of availble mem while playing Bf3

added another 8gb, and now avg 3-4 gb available when playing.....😱

sorry but I disagree I can afford to buy it but for price/performance just isn't there for it. No matter how you spin it.

And I would glady call someone an idiot to their face for going with a $1000 gpu setup to play on a single monitor at 1080p.

It has nothing to do with being holler than thou.

It just makes no logical sense to me.

If someone choose to spend 10k on a gaming pc its there business but that doesn't make it smart choice!
