845, 845D, 845E, 845G, 845GL all do not support HT.
I don't have time to check right now, but I believe the older Asus E and G boards do.

So...where can we actually buy this "Athlon XP 2800+?"

I see the 2700 on pricewatch (for $355).

For a few bucks more (proc costs $388) you can pick up a P4 2.8Ghz.

Yes you could, but the 2700+ is as fast or faster and as you mentioned, cost less.

In regards to the flame-bait, fan-boy comments...

For comparison you could've thrown in a duallie rig to see how it fares against HT...

Xeons and a 7500 board, no HT...
I second that. Two Xeons-2.4 would cost as much as a single 3.06.

Also, on multi-threaded apps the performance should be pretty close.

Since HT and SMP use different strategies to perform I doubt they'll be comparable.

Evan-

I hate to say it but the review was almost too long. I'm one to cut to the chase and zero in on the apps that interest me. The video encoding section actually was what interested me the most, but in the end was valueless. Many people are using TMPGenc and converting DVix either to MPEG-1 for VCD or MPEG-2 for DVD. While XMpeg is an excellent DVD ripping tool, its not something many care to use. Lets face it, we use both for movie rips more than anything and the majority of people are just downloading these movies already in their Dvix form. How about adding TMPGEnc to your suite and run some conversions of Dvix files to MPEG-1 for us?

I'd also like to see another article from an ANANDTECH POWER USERS perspective. You know as well as anyone that the typical AT reader is dabbling with some sort of overclocking. How about you compare the new HT3.06's to an array of overclocked P4s, 2GHz+ Celerons, and Thoroughbreds all running at their respective limits? Sure would be nice to have comparisons of a HT3.06 to a Celeron2GHz@3GHz in multimedia and whatnot! You know you want to do this... :D

I'm still hoping that this will receive some attention in the future. I would like to see a DIRECT comparison between a HT chip and an actual Dual-P4 system at the same clockspeed and all. For all I care underclock the HT P4 to match the speed of a Dual P-4 system. I wish that this was included to day, but I can wait..... I just would like to to eventually appear sometime!

This is one of the best reviews I've ever read. Very objective and fairly unbiased. Instead of turning the HT on and off on every benchmark and skewing the number of entries on a graph the advantages of HT were cleanly displayed in a couple of clean looking charts.

Please step away from his asss and put your lips down!!!!

I don't like your skewed comment!!! Nothing skewed from having a direct same speed comparison..Heck it is the best way to compare it. I am glad you don't do any reviews!!!!

All I have to say is until you can buy it, quit talking about it....There are ppl with the 3ghz p4's right now and they likley can have DCDDR mobos before the nforce2 and 2800+ come out....

Hmmmm...I wonder who gave me the low review!!!:| This site is so full of a bunch of little kids who can't stand when their favorite doesn't when or nobody agrees with them...BooHooo

Nice review...

Btw, Kyle ran his 3.06 @ 3.82 water cooled and stable.

Try his review if you want to see HT on and off.

I'm more impressed with the 2800+ ;)

Of course, it's not out yet and it's pretty expensive...and may not overclock as well.

If AMD could increase its yields on the Athlon XPs they would be in great position even now. Too bad that isn't happening and too bad the Hammer hasn't come to the rescue yet.

Oh well, that is some good stuff either way. I just wish AMD could provide more competition at this stage - it helps everyone, especially my wallet. ;)

1. I too would also like to see performance figures in Linux

2. Hyperthreading seems mostly beneficial if you're running some sort of professional/workstation oriented software...or u're multitasking some set of retardedly chosen applications. IOW, I don't see the benefits of hyperthreading widening the performance delta between Intel and AMD cpus too much....at least not for most of us. If you're running 3DSM or the like, then that's a different story.

And there's all those people who play games in the background while they do photoshop as their main task.

RE:"Please step away from his asss and put your lips down!!!!"

Oh plaaaeeze, I thought it was a good review and stated as such. In the past I've been less complimentary at times.

RE:"I don't like your skewed comment!!! Nothing skewed from having a direct same speed comparison..Heck it is the best way to compare it. I am glad you don't do any reviews!!!!"

You're lucky I don't do reviews. I'd pick apart every benchmark and expose all the tips and tricks chipmakers uses to make their chip look good, especially Intel.
OTOH, Anands review is plenty good enough so I why should I bother?

As for age, I guess you are the old man around here, eh?
