Has everyone noticed that these new polls since the makeover have centered around giving anadtech money either through subscriptions or T shirts and the such like. What do they take us for. Surely a service that has been this good for this long doesn't need gimmicks or subscription services.
 
Maybe I've been under a rock but I haven't seen anything on subscriptions, but as for tshirts and stuff that isn't exactly just giving them money you are purchasing something and unless I'm mistaken I don't think they would "force" you to buy a tshirt to read the web site.
 
I have no idea what you are talking about with these polls, but if you are talking about advertisements, that is the only way too make money unless you want to pay a monthly fee, so quit whining...
 
You don't realize how much it costs to run a server like this, do you? He's got what, fifteen Athlon systems set up for it?

I'm not trying to undermine them or anything. I think its a great service and has certainly helped me over the past few years in choosing stuff.

And I do know how expensive computer systems are, both to set up and then maintain.

I just think that if they have acheived this all through advertising then there is little requirement to cahrge people unless the service is substantially different.

I personally would accept a charge for a network/enterprise edition of the site as I can understand that there would be a hugely increased workload for all the reviewers.

And sorry about the spelling error.

Here's something to think about. The AnandTech Forums actually eat up more in bandwidth costs than the advertising on the Forums actually brings in, by a good amount. Because of the nature of the Forums, they actually eat up more bandwidth than the main site in spite of the fact that the main site does more traffic. In the business world, when something isn't making money but is rather losing money on a consistent basis that is almost a given that you kill that part of the company off - yet the forums are still around and I personally go up to Pittsburgh along with Jason Clark almost every quarter to perform upgrades/maintanence on the servers just to make sure that the Forums are running as quickly as possible. So why on earth do I keep them around? Because, personally I like them and I do like to provide you all with a place where you can feel welcome and really feel like you're a part of the family because you are.

If it weren't for advertising on the main site, there would be no Forums. I am currently working on some value added features that would help branch out the AnandTech business model to take care of things like the Forums. If you call that greedy, try spending close to a quarter million dollars a year just to keep a community running because you actually care for it not because it's bringing in a profit.

Sorry if I'm coming off a bit too passionate about this but what can I say, I've put the past four years of my life into this and I am quite passionate about it.

Nicely said Anand. Let me be the first to thank you for providing us with such a great community. I wish you the best of luck, and any cost cutting things done here will be understood. We value the content rather then the luxary offered by the forums.

Anand is the last person on this planet that would try to rip you off (IMHO). Personally, I'd give my left pinky to keep up the good work done here by all these guys.
