AnandTech FS/FT - Still a good place?

Hi All,

I was hoping to get some input on if the AT FS/FT forum is still a good place to buy, sell & trade.

I used to frequent the AT FS/FT Forum quite a lot 7-10 years ago. Had many great trades and even met some cool people.

Then I took a crazy job that occupied 60-80 hours per week and I lost track of AT for almost 8 years. (Couldn't even access my old account.)

I'd like to get back into trading here, but noticed that it seems there are more references to Craigslist and eBay here in the OT Forum. There was the occasional scammer on FS/FT back in the day, but relatively few and far-between. Hope they haven't taken over.

I would not know because every time I tried selling stuff, they would always deny me from selling it. They kept having all these rules and it just got annoying.

I haven't bought or sold anything in FS/FT, but you can bet its better policed than eBay or Craigslist IMO.

Too many people selling or wanting to trade legacy or junk hardware for newer stuff. I see them bumping posts for months without a price drop or flexibility. Might as well not waste time and try to sell on ebay.

The forum itself is great. The mods are awesome. The problem is that people selling on there act like they are a high end retail store and overprice their stuff and get pissy if you offer them a fair price. I've bought many, many things cheaper through Newegg or Amazon. My last transaction was a video game that the guy took almost 2 weeks to ship.

The glory days of FS/FT are gone. Even Craigslist is crap for computer parts. Pretty much by the time people are ready to sell, the price for the same product new is less than half of what they paid. I understand it but its a sad thing to see one of my favorite ways to impulse shop go so bad.

example, back in the day i'd buy used cdrom/dvd drive, but today, new dvd burner from newegg is $18 free shipping

so if i was going to buy one used from FS/T, i wouldn't pay more than $10 shipped. if it is properly packaged, it'll cost a FS/T seller $8-$10 in shipping alone

so i just buy new stuff from newegg

Pretty much this. Some stuff it's just not worth reselling when shipping costs are involved. Unless it's light, you might have to just trade or sell locally.

I definitely understand that.

I've been a movie collector since 1996 and trading DVDs (even Blu-rays) on the web nowadays is kind of useless unless you're dealing with rare titles.

Craigslist hasn't been very effective for me in the past unfortunately. AT was always a great place for technology and such since most folks knew what they were looking for / looking at.

I've never understood this. I always ship stuff out the same day I receive payment. At the most, I'll wait a day or two to accumulate a few packages before dropping them off for shipment if I happen to be selling a whole bunch of stuff.

I am the only vivi here, change your avatar

but it's OK, I use hardforum, stuff seems to sell decently there as well.

Ha... OK!

That's one of my favorite images of Vivi... but I defer to real Vivi ():)

Thanks for the tip on HardForum. I've never registered over there... but may give it a shot!

??? Very rarely does this happen. Mostly noobs. Even if they do who cares? Just deal with those that are looking for reasonable trades or prices.

I do hate the lowballs though. I know it doesn't hurt to ask but if I'm already selling it for a fair price don't ask me if I'll take half of that please.

You should probably look else where, as you don't qualify for that forum. You are about 8 posts short of meeting the strict requirements.

Yeah, I lost access to my old account so I started a new one and am slowly trying to work my way up to the 25 post minimum.

That's OK, my updated user-name is probably more appropriate for me now anyways, and I fortunately was still able to access my old HeatWare.

Yhpm. We can help update you.
