Zippy:

It is hard to patent the concept of DualHead technology. The idea of two monitors is not impossible to think up. I'm glad Nvidia is using a dual monitor configuration, that should make Matrox want to innovate more. Plus, Matrox wasn't the first company to use dual monitors on a video card, Appian Graphics was the first to my knowledge.

Am I missing something? This card rocks!!!

If your monitor can't do 1200x1600 or if your like me and can't tell the difference between anything over 1024x768 then there is NO REASON to buy a DDR or SDR!!!!!!

Does this mean we'll see SDR's being sold (or at least traded) for even cheaper than $119?????

THIS RULES!!!! w/ rebates I bet we can get this card for under $100!!!

Yep, I remember the Appian Jeronimo (I think that was the one) long before the G400 was around supported multiple monitors.

When I look at performance numbers I am really only interested in 1024x768@32bit as a base level. It would be nice if it can perform at the next level but less is irrelevant. Can someone explain why the GF2MX gets arse kicked by the Savage2000 at 32 bit in Q3 but runs away from it in UT? While in 16 bit it is always faster? I suppose if MeTal was used in the benchmark this wouldn't be the case but why?

As long as it is playable with most games at 1024/32 and since it has the nifty TwinView for DVD and good driver support it looks to be a winner though even if it isn't always as fast and has inferior DVD quality. I hope it does not require a fan as the picture suggests. The overclockability sounds nice too to make up for the crap memory bandwidth.

So when is this thing gonna be for sale? Will VIVO daughtercards be available? I'll buy one right now for a $100. At least it will make the wait for the next Savage or the Radeon more bearable. :p

what was this I heard about the V4-4500 dominating OEM's? ;).

Auric,
Remember that this card is a good $50 less than the savage2000(and that has s3 drivers, and we all know how "good" their drivers are), and that's the retail difference.

SuperFreaky, the MSRP is $119 so you can imagine it selling for $100 at buy.com and such. After third party rebates or coupons let's be hoping closer to $70 :)

<< In The Test page...

Matrox Millennium G400MAX 32MB (would not run on Athlon platform)

WTF? I've never heard of a g400 max that wouldn't run in an Athlon machine! I remember him asking someone who had a K7V/K7M here and a G400 MAX what he did to get it to work...but it didn't work for him. Crazy sh!t.

Errr, I must say, poor me, so right now I´m writing this on a computer that according to Anand doesnt work. I think he has to try it again.

Athlon 550@800

The execs at 3dfx/S3/Matrox all just simultaneously crapped and pissed their pants ;)

3dfx really need to be thinking of a die shrink about not, it would reduce cost of the boards and make them a lot faster. I think a 0.18 VSA100 should be able to make 220Mhz happily. Then Nvidia might have some competition.

SOLD!

This thing will be replacing my old CL RIVA TNT as soon it is available. Oh and stop whining about memory bandwidth, the Geforce 2 MX is what the TNT2 M64 is to the TNT2 Ultra... a low-cost (and supposedly "low-performance" :) ) part. Add to that the Xbox contract and the rumored deal with Apple... Damn, it makes me wish I had purchased truckloads of NVDA shares back in the TNT1 days when they went public...

I think Anand has already figured in the "E-Tailer" discounting when he projected the price at $120 or so. If you check the guillemot web site they already have their version Hercules Prophet MX listed at $149.95 for the 32 meg single view and $199.95 for the "Twin View". I also agree that ATI, 3Dfx and Matrox are all deeply concerned about their respective futures in the video card industry. This could be the ultimate bang for the buck video card for the foreseeable future. Of course in the video card industry, the forseeable future is about 4 months or so. As a loyal 3Dfx fan, I am dismayed. The only option for 3Dfx is to drop the price on the voodoo 4 4500 to LESS than the Geforce 2 MX, and frankly, based on Anand's benchmarks, cut the price on the voodoo 5 5500 to around $175 or less. I sure hope they can make a profit at that price point, otherwise they are surely toast.
My .02 worth,
chuck

the appian cards existed long before dualhead. i learned about it on dell's configuration crap...

anyway...

i was thinking, this card may be aimed at the cheap gamers like me, and the middle business end. I mean, it wreaks of a business application :p

Hehehe, sorry about my lil outburst before. I was just kinda pissed cuz it is almost EXACTLY the same as dualhead...oh well. :p

More power to em...I may have to get this card actually. Really, what I would like most is a V5 5500 with DoubleVision or whatever 3dfx would call it. ;) Heh

This is a nice card, I prolly will get one sometime.

Actually, the term MSRP was thankfully never used as it would have been a misnomer coming from the chip supplier as opposed to an individual viddy card seller:

"The big question ends up being, how much can you pick up a 32MB GeForce2 MX for? The answer happens to be a pleasing $119 which is what NVIDIA is estimating most 32MB boards will be selling for."'

Now that I learn Guillemot is listing their price as $199.95 for the TwinView it ain't so compelling all of a sudden.

I guess we'll just have to wait and see how much this sucker really costs when it's widely available from several companies. But, if Nvidia is projecting $119 for no TwinView then I would still expect to get one for much less with said rebates and coupons it's just that the one thing that made it competetive compared to the Savage2000 *is* the TwinView. So it looks like the decision is not so easy afterall. Anway, we will just have to wait and see what else pops up and what the real street prices are.

I see Guillemot's will be available July 10. $50 for the TwinView add-on is a bit steep though. I would only want it for movies to TV. I can get a standalone DVD player for $100 without all the inherent messing around, but of course it won't play AVI and MPEG files and such. Decisions decisions...

This is a winner for nVidia. I think 3dfx will have to lower the price on its voodoo 4500.
