"Anand's Material is an Embarrassment to the Hardware Review Community."

That's what Van Smith of Vanshardware had to say about Anand. Here's his exact quote:

I am deactivating the link to AnandTech because the quality and objectivity of Anand's material has degraded to the point that it is an embarrassment to the hardware review community.

Where does this guy get off spouting all this junk? Van is so hypocritical it makes me sick. I can't believe there was a time I actually took this guy seriously. Even though Van is quite knowledgeable and there is the occasion that his material is grounded in truth, it's fairly obvious to me that he has deep biases of his own.

What are all your thoughts?

*UPDATE*: Apparently quite a few people don't know who Van Smith is (which is actually good), but let me give you the quick synopsis anyway.

Van Smith worked for THG (Toms Hardware Guide, run by Dr. Tom Pabst) back in 1999/2000 but eventually "quit" and decided to join another hardware review web site called Inquest, which he later "quit" due to unspecified circumstances (some believe it to be his false analysis that Pentium 4 clock throttling is "bad", and that it happens all the time. Inqst supposedly booted him cause his testing mythology was found to be inaccurate). Now Van runs his own web site (vanshardware) and is in the middle of working on the "COSBI" project (Comprehensive Open Source Benchmark Initiative). This guy is clearly obsessed with the AMD vs. Intel battle and can be very biased sometimes. However, Van is an intelligent guy, and offers a lot of interesting insights sometimes.

Vanshardware???

He couldn't come up with anything better?

Sounds a lot like another hardware site I know of. 😉

Edit: I almost forgot. Beginning in the summer, I'd like you all to check out my hardware review site, www.davidshardware.com.

Well, he cant even design a decent looking website. He is an embarrasment to the web design community 😛

In the LINKS section, check this out...

<< Tom's Hardware Guide -- My old haunt, a large number of my articles are there. UPDATED: The quality and objectivity of Tom's Hardware has degraded to such a point that I am disabling this link. I will compile a list of direct links to my articles there >>

Hey....my name is Van 🙂

I would just like to point out that I have no affiliation with this person whatsoever! :|

Never heard of him, he's probably a nobody in the HW world given the amount of people here who haven't heard of him either.

He's probably just jealous he's not making as much money as Anand is.

If you don't know who Van Smith is why even take the time to mention it in this thread? All you have to do is click the link and you'll see that he's a hardware reviewer, just like Tom Pabst or Johan De Gelas (if you don't know who those people are, you probably don't want to waste your time in this thread...).

Van Smith used to write for Tom's hardware. When he did, they were flamingly anti-intel articles, so I could tell people that tom's hardware is pro-AMD, sharkyextreme is pro-Intel, and Anandtech is the only one worth reading.

I forget why he left, but he's posted a whole lot of bunk about how awful the p4 is (he created the idea that thermal protection hindered chip performance) etc.

So anything Van says can be immediately disregarded IMHO.

If anything, Anand has become more professional and less concerned with petty bickering (again IMHO) over time; not to say that he was ever really caught up in all that. Take Tom's hardware--every article feels the need to exalt or castrate this, that, or the next thing.

I dont' know who the hell Van Smith is, but let's face it guys, Anand's coverage does kinda suck these days. The forums are great, and the new reseller ratings are very cool, but the hardware coverage is shallow and infrequent. I'm finding myself ready THG more and more these days...

blah.

never heard of that fool.

and i refuse to click on the link to his website because that would only generate traffic and help him out.

anyone care to mirror it? 🙂 j/k

Sorry to hear that. I'm happy with what I read. Of course, I'm not the kind of person who is disappointed if Anand's articles come out a few hours after someone else's... :disgust:

Infrequent, yes. Though let's look at anand's articles and Tom's recently:

IDF report x3, -hammer report, buyer's guide, a mobo review and a mobo preview, etc.

Tom has filled in the gaps with shlocky articles with very little substance. They're eager to read their own writing. It's just that the hardware world hasn't been that exciting recently.

How has anand's coverage been shallow?
