bluemax: The amount of money lost by AMD is negligible compared to the amount of money they would lose by dropping the cost of their CPU's by $50. It makes more sense for them to have a way in which the user can tell if the CPU is overclocked or not.

You are getting better.

<<Then again, large OEM's will be happy that they do not have to deal with overclocking customers.>>

Come on now, OEM's don't give a hoot about what you do to your computer after it is sold. If you crack the case, they charge you.(DFI used to glue in the cables and if any where removed, you where charged!)If you alter in any way the original configuration, the OEM is not responsible for the consequences and CAN and WILL charge for the service to bring it into compliance.

I guess I should inform everyone I too am a consultant and have a business building computers for home users and business users.

(MMMMMMMM,my EGO feels sooooo good now):p

Update for sov05,

AMD DID state from day one that the Duron/T/BIRD would be clock locked. We all thought that when TOM overclocked using the A7V that we had found the magic potion to unlock the chip. I still say that there are too many Durons chips out there that can overclock, that these were all 'pre-production' Maybe the BIOS method of overclocking will work. There are reports of A7V's with bios adjustments working on Durons. A Canandian site has guaranteed overclockable Durons for sale. Maybe AMD fixed the cpu's with a certain stepping. When Anand replaced the jumpers on the AZ11, did he do both FID and BP_FID, I don't know.

Oh come on!! That's not true at all! You CAN change the multiplier, that's what the nice little contacts on the cpu are there for. They're really small, and hard to change. But surely not impossible. I will be trying it, and I'm not exactly an expert... what's everybody complaining about? Please tell me if I'm wrong here! I don't think so...
