Anandforums becoming saturated, one remedy: try other websites

I just e-mailed a star Trek website (you guys use the word Assimilate alot, so I thought it was appropriate) to help us recruit more people into our team!

keep this post alive, we need to get as many people as possible running rc5 to move us to a much higher spot overall!

I'm using this thread and the distributed forums as links for people who I inform as well.

damnit, I keep forgetting to put in a link for that. sorry about that Paulson, your website is truly great for people to learn more about configuring your RC5 client!

EDIT: here's what I wrote for this e-mail:

I'm just wondering if your site should have a bulletin board. I've seen them implimented to great use! take a look at this one for example here.

my real request for you, is to put up a link on your website for Distributed computing experiments. Seti@Home, or Distributed.net.

the reason I'm asking, is that in Distributed.net, my team, Team Anandtech is looking for more members to help boost their ranking overall.

the reason this might be of interest to you, is because many people who are involved in this, at least in our team, are star trek fans. just look here and here for more info about these two projects!

I don't think so.. but you could be right. in either case, if he/she at the other end actually reads this and follows one or two of the links, they might not agree with that assumption.

I think as long as it deals with what that group stands for, e.g. star trek - seti are kind along the same lines and might be of intrest. And once the intrest is there you mention rc5. I always thought spam was just someone e-mailing junk to anyone. But what do i know, its early and iam still on my first coffee. :D

lane42, you are correct. they must be interested in these types of things!

guys does Firingsquad have members who might be interested? what about Tom's Hardware? we need to get people excited about this team effort, that's how we did so well before, that's how we have to do it now!

BTW, I fired off an e-mail to firingsquad about this.

I've already tried at Tomshardware ,though I hadn't mentioned RC5.
The post kinda backfired because it only ended up recruiting for other teams! (though we nearly got 1 in a recent revival of the thread).

Related thread here

Recruiting thread @ Tomshardware forum
I tried Sharkeys forum too & got zero response ,twice!!
I tried AGN forum & some uptight mod got all stroppy because I mentioned Anandtech(even though there was no direct link to Anands site) & deleted my thread:| ,stupid git!
I tried at overclockers.co.uk forum & that ended up triggering TWO new teams! ,Team Picard & OcUK Overclockers.
I tried Overclockers Australia forum & that ended up triggering a new team for them too!

Not exactly a resounding success! ,as far as I know TA SETI got no new members from any of those threads!
Any other forums I've missed out? ,feel free to try!:) ,or give me a link here.

bleh..

I tried to go to the Firingsquad forums, but after a whole bunch of trouble, I realized I was already registered in there from a long time ago, with a user name that I hate..

I can't find any way to change the name, is it possible? could I delete that login? I can't create another, it won't let me..

otherwise I would have tried to post something in their forums.

Can't you just login & change your username instead of creating another 1?

"Can't you just login & change your username instead of creating another 1?"

no, it won't let me.. I go to edit my profile, and it LOOKS like you can, but when you actually go to edit it, the username is just text on a webpage, not a box, or anything to let me change it..

soccerman, find your cookie file and delete the cookie that has to do with firingsquad. netscape is in your user folder in cookies.txt, dunno where IE's is cuz IE strews everything all over your hard drive.

or, use the browser you usually don't. it won't have the cookie.

hmm.. why would deleting my cookie do anything? I have to log in in order to edit my info at Firingsquad forums.. deleting the cookie shouldn't do much, but I'll try anyway!

I'm working on a system that will allow miniteam stats under SETI, if all the members have stable IPs. Might help prevent new, independent teams forming.

no I didn't, unfortunately, but I've not given up yet!

what I would like you guys to do is e-mail them all at the same time.. if we were to spread out these e-mails, the impact would be less then at the same time.

make them at least take notice. then after that, we can consider the admin's to be dead to this topic, and we'd have to go to the source..

the message boards. if I can only figure a way out to get my Gamers.com forum name, I'd be there trying to gain respect in their community (ok, I have a plan, gain their respect, and then hit em with RC5-Seti@Home).

Ummm... yeah, go try over at the HardOCP forums (hardforum.com), that would go over real well ;P. It really does sound like spam to solicite from an unrelated group, I mean, going for a linux related board/mailing list or something would make a little more sense.

I still think this is bad form. I don't know what the other members of the Distributed Computing Forum think but what you guys are doing would really annoy me if I were a member of one of the other forums, especially if they have their own teams. If you get too overzealous, this seriously has the potential of making AnandTech look quite bad. I doubt The Boss would support this either, although I'm just guessing.

Spam is spam.

Edit:

<< I tried AGN forum & some uptight mod got all stroppy because I mentioned Anandtech(even though there was no direct link to Anands site) & deleted my thread:| ,stupid git! >>

Perfect example.

"especially if they have their own teams."

what if they DON'T have a team? that's who I'm targeting!

I understand your concern, I have tried not to do anything that would be considered annoying (unless you call a harmless e-mail annoying).

maybe you can find a BETTER way to get other teams and websites to help out? rather then being part of the problem, it would be nice to be part of the solution no?

if you call that Spam, then I'm sorry it's too late. I've sent a total of 2 e-mails. one to startrek.com and one to firingsquad.

I won't if you really do think that it is bad publicity. however you cannot build a team without members, and might I remind you, reqruitment here doesn't look to be anything NEAR enough to beat out DPC..

I'm with Soccerman on trying to get more members.
On the way to do it, we differ in opinion, but we are still people aren't we :p:p

I think the personal approach Dennillfloss is taking, is the right one. :D:D
WTG, Dennilfloss.

From his thread updates it clearly shows it pays off. It might not be as quick as sending a message to a whole board, but it is a steady and sure way of strengthening the TA-ranks.

I would suggest, that every TA-member that has some good correspondence with people on other boards (that are not member of another team) try to get them into distributed computing (whatever project). To SciFi fans I think the Seti@Home project is of much interest. They will eventually get to hear of our other projects.

Peter.

Recruiting for TA on other forums can cause the problem Assimilator got into.
OTOH, recruiting for a particular MT with a special touch (...) is something else. If it then happens that this MT in part of TA, well... who cares ?
