Anand Retires!!

I've always held a high opinion of Anand and this site but to find out within 48 hours that he was only 1 of 5 journalists who were on the 'friends of apple' list that got prerelease hardware for review which meant a significant financial reward for him in terms of page hits (and that he never disclosed that and complained about competitors short prerelease review periods) and that he is now officially employed and in all likelihood has had an arrangement leading to that employment for at least 6+ months that he didn't disclose severely impacts his credibility and his legacy. In addition there must be a squadron of lawyers from various Apple competitors like Qualcomm and Intel who are now reviewing the hell out of any NDA's he signed.

Thank you for so many years of service. This web page taught me the trade skills I needed to overcome a family stuck in extreme poverty; the forum allowed me to overcome my dyslexia and learn to communicate; and this community has helped guide me numerous times, including one professor here who suggested I go to the school I'm at now for my doctorate: it was the right move, i'm just about to defend my dissertation and take a tenure track position.

So thank you

The end of an era. It's been a good ride all these years and I look forward to many more under the new management. Thanks for all you've done for the community and good luck with your new career, Anand!

I'm mildly interested in if this retirement is due to his new position at Apple or if he had an intention of moving on from Anandtech and waited to announce until he had a position secured.

Either way Anand has done great work and I really appreciate the time and effort he put into the tech news scene. Good luck at the new opportunity.

He didn't make a general statement that he was retiring. He said, "I am officially retiring from the tech publishing world."
I wonder why he didn't just say he had taken a new job. He didn't even have to say it was with Apple. Well, whatever. Not a big deal.

I just hope there is someone at AT that can fill in for those very in-depth Mac and iDevice reviews.

I want to know quickly if the iPhone 6 and iPad Air 2 have 2 GB RAM or not.

Congrats and Good Luck Anand!

As others mentioned, he is not "retiring" simply switching job. Given that he is leaving the captaincy of his trawler and will be scrubbing the decks of a factory ship, but its not retiring by any means. Anywho, as long as the forum stays alive, I am OK. Godspeed

Sad day, and the end of an era. Anandtech and the forums has been so crucial to my development, bit by bit it it taught me everything about building my first computer over ten years ago and I've only grown since then. Love the site and have a tremendous amount of respect for Anand. Best wishes.

I think he's just mad that he went bald after reading the forums last week.

Been following this site since 1999. Hardware has become a little stagnant over the past 5 years so I no longer read all of his reviews but I consider Anand to be the best there is still and it is sad to see him go.

Ironic to see he is going to Apple. I remember when he tried to live a month on a Mac. That was many many years ago. Now Apple has a much bigger presents in the market.

wow. some of this is very damning on Anand:

In other cases, Apple has offered gear to certain niche publications. Technical analysis-focused reviews site AnandTech received early access to the iPhone 5s and iPad Air, the first smartphone and tablet to include 64-bit processors.

...
Apple can already tell what a review is going to say from [a publication's] pre-coverage, and they’re not going to give you a review unit if you’re not going to play ball.” In other words, Apple feeds the writers who will do its bidding, and starves the ones who won’t follow its messaging.

In 1999, I used to read Toms Hardware, Sharky Extreme and Anandtech. Anand outlived the other two by more than 13 years. I guess 15 years wasn't such a short career.

Tom's Hardware still exist.
Sharky Extreme has been long gone, but their almost dead forum still exist.

tom's hardware used to be great. but then it got to the point you could tell how the reviews were by what banners were up.

well no shit. find me a reviewer who is fairly well known that is honest? have you not noticed the hugely pro-apple slant?

Though i have total respect for him as a business man. he started a company young, ran it and made it into a big success. now he leveraged that into a high paying gig at Apple.

brilliant.

Both those sites were bought out and quickly run into the ground. Their founders left (or at least stopped writing) when they were acquired.

But I do have to say this, I still visit toms for their annual benchmark charts. They are just about the only site that has benchmarks comparing cross generational products.
