Why do the anti-war folk continue to debate the surge?

Violence in Iraq is WAY down in the last year. This is the best thing to happen to us since we started this war and as some have pointed out the best chance we have for us to get out of Iraq in a positive manor.

"Tell him what he's won, Bob!"

"A $3.2 trillion dollar federal budget and a $9.5 trillion dollar national debt!"

*APPLAUSE*

When are you ever going to figure it out, PJ? There never was a way for us to get out of Iraq in a positive manner for the moment we went in.

Iraq War Polls of Americans:

"When it comes to the situation in Iraq, do you approve or disapprove or have mixed feelings about the way George W. Bush is handling that issue?" If "mixed feelings" or not sure: "If you had to choose, do you lean more toward approve or disapprove?"

Approve: 34%
Disapprove: 62%

This same question one year ago:

Approve: 32%
Disapprove: 66%

"Do you favor or oppose the U.S. war in Iraq?"

Favor: 33%
Oppose: 66%

This same question one year ago:

Favor: 33%
Oppose: 64%

Clearly, the surge has not been a huge success in the eyes of American citizens. Must be that liberal media!

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Because PJ, the surge is at best a mini surge, and now we de mini surge back to original inadequate troop levels.

Yes, the reduction of violence in Iraqi violence is wonderful, but don't assume causality yet, without the political progress that has yet to occur, the US occupation is still fighting the anarchy the initial occupation caused.

While us anti war types may also hope that the lack of violence will continue, the potential for renewed violence is and remains very real.

The probability of the the wisdom of GWB&co ever being realized is somewhere between extremely slim and next to none. All alliances in Iraq are tenuous at best, Petraeus is much smarter than Rumsfeld, but even Pertraeus pegs the odd of your favorable outcome at no more than 1 in 4.

Hope that explains it to you, even with a best case scenario, Iraq will probably never be worth the present costs. And given the long term instability it has sowed, it may be decades before we really realize how stupid it was.

TLC has staked his entire reputation on Iraq being totally solved by March of 2010.

Should that TLC prediction not be be redeemed, I think we should all demand that TLC cease posting on this board.

I for one will hold TLC to his predictions and allow no back of off crawfish away from that TLC prediction by TLC.

Why wait?

Shouldn't trolling be a bannable offense?

Oh, I forgot about the amusement factor.

Nevermind.
If he was some kind of CPU or Video Card fanboi I'm sure those in charge of those forums would have sent him packing but here he just does what the rest of us do except he's the Master and the rest pale in comparison. I'm sure if he was arguing in favor of something you agree with him about you'd probably be cheering him on.

I once witnessed him and Moonbean play this game on a subject for 5 days with neither of them giving an inch. I though it was cool though as he was so occupied with Moonie that the rest of the threads got a brief but welcome reprieve from his art of talking in circles.

Good points; well taken.

That pretty much sums it up. If argued in here in favor of the anti-war position I'd be hailed as Mr. Righteous in here by the same folks that berate me now. I'd be the reincarnation of conjur.

I always find it ironic that those who most vehemently argue for freedom of speech absolutely cannot tolerate any speech that doesn't jibe with their own opinion, and who can't stand the mechanisms they themselves employ used against them. It's quite ironic.
I don't see anybody posting that you should be censored. They are just calling you on your bullshit like you do them.
I wasn't claiming that anyone is posting that they want me censored or censured. It's more about the dogpile of opinion effect. I've seen the exact opposite of that effect in forums where conservatives compose the primary membership and see them dogpile the minority liberals, so it's not any surprise. In fact, I completely expect it to happen; welcome it even.

Arguing about video cards and CPUs are almost as stupid as arguing about politics. It's not near the challenge though. Besides, I'm agnostic on those subjects as well. I don't care what's best or worst at any one time, nor am I a fanboi for either side. Just because my preference at the moment is for Intel CPUs that'd change in a heartbeat if AMD came out with the better product.

It's kind of how I feel about the upcoming election, in a way. Except both pissed me off last go 'round and I went Cyrix instead. 🙂

Why not ask the same question of the sideline cheerleaders?

Any "war" based on lies is lost the first day one of your guys dies fighting in it so this will never be up for debate. The ends will NEVER justify the means regarding Iraq no matter how it ends and now matter how it is spun years and years later. We all were here to see it and experience it. And history is a fickle bitch.

Pretty amazing, eh. Knowing I can still run circles around you guys while being so impaired when everyone else is mentally sharp as a tack must be a pretty debilitating feeling.

This is great news for America and bad news for the Democrats, especially those who predicted the surge would be a failure.

You're wrong. It doesn't matter how well the war is going now. The consensus for quite a while now is that this war was unnecessary - a waste of money, bodies, and lives - and was and continues to be irrelevant to the national security of the United States.

"Winning" in Iraq is what is known as a Pyrrhic victory.
The consensus of who?? The anti-war folks?

Well, gee, how about all of America. Check out last month's ABC News/Wash Post poll:

See #13

All in all, considering the costs to the United States versus the benefits to the United States, do you think the war with Iraq was worth fighting, or not? Do you feel that way strongly or somewhat?

Worth Fighting: Net = 36% (22% believe strongly, 13% believe somewhat)
Not worth Fighting: Net = 63% (13% believe somewhat, 50% believe Strongly)

Why do YOU continue to pretend that "winning" in Iraq means squat, except that maybe we can finally pull out of there and reduce our rate of wasting money and lives?

Tell us what the NET benefit is (pre-invasion as compared with "winning") to the U.S. and Iraq, compared to the price we've paid. Please explain to us how the U.S. is better off now, vis-a-vis Iraq, than we were pre-invasion.

To hear you tell it, if we dropped an atomic bomb on New York City to kill the drug dealers, then spent the next 10 years decontaminating it, you'd claim "victory" when the clean-up crews finished.

Why bother TLC? None of us are changing our minds about Iraq. You may as well beat your head against the wall. Are you a glutton for punishment, or what?! 😛

Exactly!!!!

We have six more months before the next President takes office.

Based on the way things have changed there is the last six months by time we have a new President the debates we are having on Iraq will be meaningless. We will no longer be debating staying or getting out. Instead we will be looking at what type of long term presence we will have in Iraq and how big of a residual force.

I would expect that number to be the 80,000+ range based on what Hillary and Obama supporters have said.

And I HIGHLY doubt that all of our troops are out by 2012 and I expect that no one will really care. In fact the day after Obama take office, if he wins, the left will stop talking about bringing the troops home and find something else to talk about.

I may be a glutton for puishment in here, but I'm a glutton for punishment who's right about Iraq, whereas you and yours are gluttons for punishment who are wrong about it. If you want to revel in our incorrect assertions, do help yourself. By all means, crow about being wrong concerning Iraq if you get some weird jolly from it.

Bullshit. When people watch a football game where a coach makes bad decisions for 3-1/2 quarters, then suddenly at the last minute makes changes that end up winning the game, few remember the previous 3-1/2 quarters. All most remember is that they won the game in the end. The only ones that dwell on those first 3-1/2 quarters are those who supported the (ultimately) losing side.

BS back to you.

The attitude of people watching a football game isn't that the game is not worth playing. They don't believe the "home team" shouldn't have played in the first place. They don't just want the game to end. So your analogy is full of crock.

Your continuing mistake, like that of most righties, is your adherence to the perception that Iraq is now about winning and losing, about victory and defeat. It's not. It's about getting the hell out of there.

When people watch a football game where the coach makes bad decisions for 3 and a half quarters are almost always watching a lost football game that even inspired decisions in the last eighth of the game cannot save.

What is somewhat laughable is any comparisons with GWB and the mighty Casey who struck out. At least the mighty Casey who struck out leaving no joy in Mudville had a prior track record of success, as for GWB, everything he touches turns to shit.

But that is the other thing about 3 and a half quarters of a losing football game, the team who has been gifted by poor play by the opponent no longer has to score, all they have to do is run out the clock.

And speaking of clocks, everyone's backward Bush watches are ticking down with the time being half past lame duck, maybe a new coach can save the day, but if GWB were a football coach, he would have been fired long ago.

Inspired play by GWB?, its never ever happened in the history of the world. Everyone in the world is just waiting for GWB to be gone.

You're comparing war to a football game?

Apparently TastesLikeChickenhawk only cares about winning. It doesn't matter that he spent the next five years worth of player salaries on this one game and that half of his defensive line was dead by the end of the third quarter.

How's that for a football analogy? 😛
