Analog out versus DVI with a convertor... which is better?

I'm going to get a Geforce 4 card soon, and was wondering (untill I get 2 monitors)

if I used a DVI converter from the DVI out there would be a better 2D picture

than the Analog out.



I know Analog out quality varies by manufacturer....


Do DVI convertors vary in quality ?

Having founded my video editing and video camera busines when analog was the only choice, the biggest difference out of the gate is the analog deck used for outputting your signal.

If you really have an important project, and you need the best possible analog quality, just e-mail me and I can discuss the low-cost/highest quality analog to digital services that I offer.

For low-budget projects where there is no budget, all I can say is start with the earliest generation version of your analog source and use a digital deck as the ee-ee convertor to fire-wire.

DVI-I supports both a digital and an analog connection in one connector. Not certain what you mean by a converter. If you use a DVI cable from the card to the monitor it should support the digital connection. If you use a DVI to 15-pin d-sub cable it will only support the analog interface.

What he means is, if he got a gainward geforce 4, and he is forced to use the dvi->adapter since his card has 2 dvi outs and comes with an analog adapter, will his 2d quality be the same as if he had a normal analog out.

I wish I knew.

DVI-I is one connector with two kinds of outputs on - analog and digital. The analog signal is on the
three blade-shaped contacts, and it's the exact same signal you would have on the old 15-pin
analog VGA connector. These adapters "do" nothing, it's just a pair of connectors wired accordingly.

So yes, what you get there is the analog VGA signal you're used to.

Hmm.. didn't know that. Never had a monitor with digital input.


So if I get a card that has both the old Analog Video out and the DVI-I video out

and my monitor only has Analog in...

Would I be better off just connecting the Analog out or using the DVI to D-sub cable ?

No, they'd both be identicle. It would be a waste of time and money to get a DVI-I>D-sub cable.
