Anal gland abscess in dog?

My dog had some anal gland issues when he was younger and I guess, to a small degree, has had them always (he's 4). But not to the point where they had to be manually expressed on a regular basis.

Anyway, I noticed tonight that he has a pretty dense mass on the left side. It's pretty swollen and feels quite tight/dense. I've noticed him licking back there some lately but he hasn't scooted at all or displayed any significant discomfort. I'm just curious if anyone has a dog who's gland problem got that bad and what the vet did? I've read some had to have surgery and some simply had it lanced.

I'm just really worried because along with the abscess stories I found online, I also found stories of anal tumors in that same location. He was neutered which lowers the chances of that but you still never know. Hoping to get him into the vet first thing in the morning and praying it's nothing too serious.
 
express it!!!!! fun stuff I hear beagles have that problem a lot, but you gotta release it once in a while 😛 Luckily my beagle hasn't had the problem yet.

It's beyond that point. When he was younger, it wasn't a problem expressing them. But this is no longer impacted. It's now an abscess and it's actually really dangerous to mess with them when they're to that point because they can rupture. I tried a little bit earlier but it wasn't productive and he just yelped a lot. Gonna let the vet handle it and just hope it's nothing more than an abscess that can be relieved by her.
 
You can have them removed. I think once they start getting infected it is a constant battle. Consult your vet and see what he thinks. Maybe a manual expression will take care of the issue as mentioned above.

Besides leaving their 'calling card' I don't think the anal glands serve any useful purpose.

Bacon's glands fill up sometimes and the stench is awful.

I saw that episode. It was dirty, very dirty. Supposedly a good dog groomer will do that as a normal thing.

Yeah, I've read that removal is often the best solution if it's a reoccuring problem. If this can be manually expressed, I'm not sure I wanna see it because there is significant swelling right now. It would be one huge and horribly smelling mess. I guess that's when vets are thankful for the money they make. But I don't see this being done by normal expression means. It's just way too dense to flow out like it normally does during that procedure.

They may have to sedate him and inject water into there to break it down enough to flush it out. At this point, that seems like a pretty positive scenario based on some other alternatives
 
My parents dog has a problem with his anal gland and it gets all swollen and has to be "drained" every once and a while. They learned how to do it, but it is such a gross job they just take him to the vet every couple weeks or month or whatever and he only chartes $10 or $20 to do it. Other than that if they keep getting it taken care of regularly its not much of a problem. I'd say get to the vet and talk to them about it.
 
Our Bassit Hound used to get that. It smelled really bad and we called it "tin can ass" because that's how it smelled. It was really weird. Anyway, yeah, it's gross.
 
My neighbors sprinkle a little Metamucil on their dog food every day, they said it helps prevent this.
 
yeap. my golden had that. we would have to go in and they woudl empty it by hand. IT IS FRICKEN NASTY.


 
ah so lucky my dog doesn't have this problem. get a vet to teach u how to express em right so u dont hurt the dog
