the nb fan on my an7 is dying out sporadically dropping from 5400 rpm to 120 rpm!!! i have no clue as to what i scausing this. everything was working ok for a month and now suddenly this has come up...

any one has any clues as to what can fix this? my config is

amd xp 2500+
abit an7
POWMAX CP769PL-6 400W case
fail safe defaults config in bios

the bios is what came with the mobo, i have not upgraded it or anyhting.. i am not good at the hardware stuff... and am worried this my **** up my entire system which is under a month old.

basically while windows is running a very loud two tone siren starts blaring... this happened last night... so i opened the case tried to start the comp so i could look at the nb fan. and each time i would start the comp the siren would go on... so i did this a few and then it just stopped...

the only thing i can think of is that it is may be being caused by my psu. is this possible? coz the case was very cheap ($30) and came with a 400W psu so i am wondering if thats the problem... i wanted to get some opinions from veterans here

please please help!!

Does the fan actually slow down?

These fans have been prone to failure. You could try adding a drop of motor oil to the fan by lifting the sticker on the fan and there'll be a place to drop oil.

Many nForce 2 boards use a fanless northbridge cooler. Your board probably won't die, but may become unstable if the fan isn't working properly. You can also replace it with a bigger heatsink like the Zalman ones and not have to worry about a fan altogether.

yes the fan slows down... or starts slow... around 3000 rpm.... one of these 2 always happens... i have seen it visually...

one thing i noticed is that the fan when working properly is very very quiet... however it starts making a fairly lound sound (relative) when it slows... do u think its dust?

there is no visible dust however...? thanks a million for your response..

also what do u think is better.. should i just get a large heat sink? is it easy to install though? coz i am no expert at this

thanks again

Dust contributes, but those fans are generally low quality.

It's pretty easy to replace the fan/heatsink. You have to take out the motherboard, pop the push pins out and you may have to twist the fan off because it may be also held using a adhesive thermal pad. The northbridge heatsink you buy will most likely come with instructions.

Mine died after a couple months and I got the same one as above.
It seems to work fine.

this is due to no third wire on the fan i wouldnt worry that fan will not fail like the other one did. as long as its spinning you should be fine
