Ah...like a month ago I was sitting in this Company training and the girl sitting next to me pops up pictures on her iphone from her recent trip to Peru. 1st pic was 2 cute little guinea pigs sitting in a pen looking at her, next picture was of a roasted guinea pig sitting on a plate. It was pretty gross.

Yeah, but we don't have contests where we try to make the animals look like little people then eat the losers. We also don't deep fry the animals whole, bones and all, and serve them on a stick. So I'd say it's a little different.

Okay, so if they did this down under, would it be, "Come on, we'll throw another guinea pig on the barbie!!"??? 😉

Hey, at least they don't try to disguise what it is. I remember, years ago in the Philippines, coming up to the guys running the little bbq hibachis on the street, selling meat on a stick. What kind of meat is that?? This one pork, this one beef. Uh-huh........right!! :roll:
 
I've always said "One man's pet is another man's lunch" ESPECIALLY when traveling abroad, and in this case we have both! WIN WIN !!! 😀

I'm thinking they're like rabbit....

Says they taste like rabbit or dark meat of chicken. I'd be willing to give it a try. Hmmm, maybe the next time I'm at the farm auction and guinea pigs are going for 50cents each... 🙂
 
So in the lab where I work one of the other grad students is from Peru. When she was still a small kid, she went on a vacation and her family ate her guinea pig that she was keeping as a pet. She laughed about it, then grimaced and said something under her breath - I think she was kinda traumatized.

But, there it is - it's just an animal that gets eaten, there's really nothing spectacular about it, although it is a little loco that they have a costume contest before cooking most of them up... /snicker

While FFA doesn't "dress" them up, they parade cattle that they have raised as newborns and then auction them off to the highest bidder who will usually have them slaughtered and cut up into pieces.

I've actually eaten both - had guinea pig ("cuy") when I was in Cusco, Peru two years ago. Had whale steak (from a minke whale IIRC) when I was in Iceland the year before. The guinea pig just tasted like dark meat chicken, but I only had a bit (my friend ordered it). The whale steak looked just like a regular steak, tastes like slightly rubbery beef.
