A Chicago-area man drowned Saturday after an encounter with an aggressive swan.
Anthony Hensley of Villa Park works for a company that uses swans and dogs to keep geese out of ponds.
He was kayaking in the pond, checking on a swan's nest when the bird attacked, forcing him from the kayak, Cook County Sheriff's Office spokesman Frank Bilecki explained.
Witnesses saw Hensley struggling with the bird as he made his way towards the shore, then slip under the water and never resurface.
Emergency responders and dive crews were able to recover his body.
Attempts at reviving him with CPR were not successful.

you can't rule out fowl play in a case like this.

If the swan hadn't been acting suspiciously, none of this would have happened.

It's time to have a swan roast. Those birds are evil.

He was checking on its nest. How do humans react when other species "check up" on their babies?

Though swans are really aggressive birds, that's why geese stay away.

I remember running from swans back when I lived near a lake. The threat of catching some avian virus scares me more than fighting them. Nothing beats two knuckles to a bird.

Nasty birds, the one that attacked my friends mom actually left the pond and sought her out, then proceeded to drag her back to the pond! No nests involved there iirc...

There has to be more to this story, that guy looks like he can swim, and I'm sure he outweighed the bird. After the first few minutes where it's clear that the attacking animal means business, I think it's time to go caveman and start breaking and biting anything you can get your hands on!

It's a shame, RIP man. I hereby offer my skills of condolence to your rather buoyant wife.

He obviously wasnt wearing a life vest.

Trying to swim while being violently attacked isn't easy. Trying to attack what is attacking you and trying to swim at the same time is almost impossible.

I think hypothermia and a desire to not hurt the bird is what killed him, that and maybe not being a really strong swimmer (odd considering his occupation in and around bodies of water)
I'd like to think that a grown man, feeling tired and desperate, would have made it to the point where he could stand and then start wailing on the bird. I realize the birds are aggressive, but we are still talking about a bird here. People go through much worse with dogs and bears and survive all the time. Swans aren't submersible like otters or cormorants last I checked, seems the "swim away underwater from the swarm of bees" tactic could have worked here in some way. Who knows.

Maybe he played D&D and was worried about losing his saving throw to the dreaded wing buffet?

I have been chased away by geese at my job before. Trying to survey a pond with active nests isn't fun...
