OLYMPIA, Wash. - Anyone who studied Asian American history knows that the word ?Oriental? conjures up images of people less than savage as the term was used in Europe and then the United States in the last three centuries. And now the state of Washington has officially acknowledged the term as derogatory and offensive and banned it from all public text. ?Asian? rather than ?Oriental? will be used to refer to the people of the racial category in all government statutes, codes, and regulations, even if many unknowingly interchange the ?O? word with the term ?Asian,? and that covers anything Filipino American.

I take offense with having to put "Asian" when I fill out forms that ask for race. The reason is twofold. First, my race is Indian, but my great grandparents went to the Caribbean as indentured laborers. I have nothing in common with real Indians. Second, those real Indians have nothing in common with East Asians (Orientals). The term "Asian" is the most arbitrary.
Edit: Also, Europe and Asia are one continent, Eurasia. There is no such thing as Asia. The Indian "subcontinent" is a separate continent that was smashed into Eurasia.
So you don't like being called Oriental because you're not supposed to like being called Oriental. Interesting.Originally posted by: webcammie

me too. I would not like it if someone calls me Oriental.
But back in the days in the U.S., oriental was used in a derogatory way...ie separation of races like "oriental schools."

WHERE did you get that conclusion??????????
edit.
I don't like being called Oriental because TO ME I AM NOT ORIENTAL. I AM on the broader sense -- ASIAN AMERICAN, but more precisely VIETNAMSE. I just don't like that term (oriental) being referred to me. Now, if other people are fine with being called Oriental (ie you), then sure, I am not going to go off and be all elitist on you and say you shouldn't like that word blah blah blah because it is derogatory. It is a preference and I prefer not to be called that. I wouldn't like it if someone comes up to me and ask, "hey are you oriental?" Furthermore, i hate it when people try to be cool and say stupid stuff to me like, "konichiwa (sp?)" or any other hellos in different asian languages. If you don't know where I am from, ask. Don't assume. It makes an ass out of you.

and of course siberian russians are asian, arabs are asian, persians are asian, and a whole bunch of other people.
nice edit. that is true. europe is a state of mind more than anything else. hell, did the ancient greeks consider, say, judea and phoenicia to be asian? i'm not sure the word originally applied to anything other than asia minor. though, one would assume there is an asia major. or, that europe applied to anything other than the western shore of the aegean sea
I'd have to agree with this dude.Originally posted by: matstars

No. You took this out of context.
Some people TAKE offense when they are called Oriental. I am one of the example so I would appreciate it if you don't.
Based on my interaction with other people of european descent, it is OKAY for me to call them WHITE as it is okay for them to call me ASIAN. So I call them white when someone asked me, "who did you hang out with today. Oh I hung out with Chris. Chris the asian guy or the white guy? the white guy."
Now, since I know Chris and I know he is Italian, I now refer to him as the Italian guy and likewise, he now refers to me as the Vietnamese chick.
Back to you. You don't like people calling you white? Then correct them. However, I for once, have never came up to someone and ask, "hey are you white?" or "look at that white guy."
You admit that you are of Vietnamese origin and are Asian-American, but you deny that you've an Oriental background?Originally posted by: webcammie
