An issue with my new Dell UltraSharp U2412M 24" LED LCD Monitor

Hi guys,

I recently got this IPS monitor. Everything works well with it except for this one thing.

Based on what angle I look at the screen from, the blacks on the corners of the screen turn grey pretty quickly. Even if the offset angle is very small.

Even when looking head on, I can see the black's at the bottom right corner turn grey. This gets more frustrating when I am watching a movie and the black bars at the bottom and top turn grey.

It's easier to explain with pictures. So here is the imgur link.

Can you help me identify this issue? Is this really an issue, or do all IPS monitors behave this way? This is my first IPS display I am not happy with the screen and would like to return it.

I hope I am asking this at the right place. Please suggest. Thanks in advance!

This is the "IPS glow" that some people find unappealing. If you want to find a screen that doesn't exhibit this distortion, you'll have to find something with a less aggressive anti-glare coating or (ideally) something with a glossy screen. The Samsung PLS displays are supposed to have less AG coating, and many of those Korean IPSs are glossy, so those might be options to consider.

Thank you for this information. Do you think all Dell UltraSharps would have this issue?

I've had four ultrasharps that all exhibited this to a degree (2007FP, U2211HM, U2311HM, U2412M). However, the 2412 is definitely the worst of the bunch. All of the series use anti-glare coating. To really get something that doesnt have any "glow" you need to get something with a glossier finish. I think you'd be happy with the Samsung PLS, which is a similar tech to IPS; it reportedly doesn't bother people as much with its finish. It's a bit more expensive though.

Of course, with a TN of that size, you're likely to get colour shift anyway, as they have much worse viewing angles.

Oic. This issue seems more common than I thought. Based on the pictures I posted, does this glow seem like a lot?

I would not mind the glow if it only occurred when I looked at the screen at an off angle. However, in this case I see the glow even if I am looking straight at the screen. What do you think?

It does seem especially bad, though it's hard to judge that from pictures. If you ordered directly from Dell, they have a really good return/exchange policy on their screens. Couldn't hurt to call and tell them that you're experiencing "flashlighting" and would like a new one. I'm pretty certain they'll cover shipping both ways.

OK. Will do this. Thank you for your help.

I have the same monitor and changed my background to black to see how bad it was. I think your monitor is exceptionally poor. I barely notice mine and yours looks awful. definitely send it back in.

IPS glow (the issue here) is independent of anti-glare coating. Buying a Samsung PLS with the semi-gloss or even a glossy IPS will not solve the problem of IPS glow. It is a function of the panel technology itself, not the coating on the IPS panel.

IPS glow is glowing of an IPS panel when viewd at off-axis angles. It can be minimized (eliminated) with the use of an A-TW polarizer, a relatively rare coating found on very high end monitors and no longer in use by just about anyone today.

I have the same monitor. Doing the same as omghaxcode and changing the background to black....I had the same results. I barely noticed the glow on mine and yours is really pronounced.
