An interesting take on the suicide bombing of the Ayatollah Khomeini mausoleum.

CNN had an Iranian Muslim explain the significance of the why the Ayatollah Khomeini mausoleum was blown up.
He did caution however, that the reporst it blew up were from the government controlled media, so we will have to wait and see if it really did.

But if it was blown up he explained that it was probably feared by the mullahs that Mousavi would go there and claim sanctuary under Islamic law.
Apparently there is a very strong religious component of Islamic law that allows a muslim to seek sanctuary in a religious icon.
The government feared Mousavi would go there and they couldn't touch him without arousing the anger of their own supporters.
And that Mousavi could even run an insurrection from within its walls.

I found this very interesting and just thought I would share it.

1:19 PM ET -- State TV reportedly shows shrine damage. From a reader: "I'm watching state TV here in Dubai and they just did a report on the bombing at the mausoleum. There was NO DAMAGE. All they showed was a broken window saying the "terrorists" luckily blew themselves up outside the building before doing any damage inside. The "bombing" was clearly a fraud as there was NO DAMAGE done to the mausoleum other than a broken window they showed at the entrance of the building. It clearly looked like there was NO BOMBING, no explosion fragments or blood shown just one shattered window.

there is an iranian concept of bast, which is basically safe harbor. from what i've read, it doesn't need to be a religious building, as the example i'm thinking of was the taking of bast at the UK and French legations in tehran by various political figures in the first half of the 20th century

and, of course, political figures have been assassinated in mosques in iran before.

I'm trying hard to avoid posting here, but I wanted to clean up one thing techs.
There hasn't been anything, as far as I've seen, religiously in the Quran, or in the Sunnah/Hadith (Saying and teachings of the prophet - of course the latter is entirely human written) to support this as part of a basic component of religious law.
The only thing I can recall off the top of my head is that fighting within a mosque is forbidden (this was especially true where the Kaba was viewed as a 'sanctuary' being a house of God).
Now this doesn't mean that in practice, it doesn't exist. What it is most likely is something that grew into the religion as it was put into practice in Iran. Now of course, Iranian religious law may allow for this, and when you refer to 'Islamic Law' you might actually be referring to Iranian Islamic Law, which would be their own implementation of religious laws...which would clear things up
