An F-22 Raptor crashed today

Since there are a number of these flying, I doubt its a fundamental flaw in the plane, but rather a particular part that wore out and wasn't replaced in time.

In all likeliness, the blame landed on the maintainance crews.

Nothing is perfect, not even an airplane worth more than its weight in gold.

F-22 dry weight is approx 30,000 lbs x Gold price 441 dollars/ounce x 16 ounces/pound = $211,680,000.00

Is it really worth that much?!

Damn

yes.... yes it does!

But as the cost of the F/A-22 has swelled, estimates range from $130 million to $250 million each, ...

Haha i was seriously just about to do the math myself... nicely done, mind reader.
But did he account for the fact that gold is measured in a Troy oz.? 😉

Half Billion dollars gone just like that.
$.5B? That sounds a bit high on the costs I've read, more like $.25B

2nd one they have lost in a month and a half. Half Billion dollars gone just like that.

The other was F18 (Navy) in early Nov.

The F22 crashed on take-off

Test Program

An Air Force F/A-22 crashed on takeoff at approximately 3:45 p.m. today [Monday] at Nellis Air Force Base. The aircraft was assigned to the 422 Test and Evaluation Squadron at Nellis AFB. The pilot ejected successfully and was transported to the Mike O'Callaghan Federal Hospital.

An interim safety board of officers will investigate the accident. As soon as additional details become available they will be provided

The computer-system that monitors stability in the inherently unstable flight design was slowed down and reacted too slowly because one of the maintenance crew was running SETI on it to boost his scores 🙂

Glad the pilot is OK.

LOL.

What ever happened to that guy who accidentally strafed a school about a month ago? Were there any further updates?

Pilot and design error was the result of the board.

Apparently, the laser designator is also tied into the trigger.
At night, it may difficult to determine which setting is active.
Warnings are posted regarding this setting, however, it may have been overlooked.
Other incidents have also happended regarding the same scenario, luckily, no-one has been injured with any of the night-time incidents.

A fire engine based at Nellis flipped over as it sped to the scene of the crash, but nobody was injured in the wreck, an Air Force official said.

On another note, they aliens are coming!!!

Actually, NO I didn't! I totally forgot about that troy ounces thing......ok lets redo it. I found a converter from pounds to troy ounces

30,000 lbs = 437500 (rounded off) ounces.

437500 troy ounces x $441/troy ounce = $192,937,500.00!!!!!

That's still a hell of alot of money in my book.
