An embarrassing query

Here's the dealio, the situation I never expected to be in: What kind of coat should I get for my dog? This isn't a style or fashion thing, my dog is single-coated and the cold times are rapidly approaching.

I've always thought dressing up a dog is ludicrous, but my lil' pooch shivers if it's too cold. What should I look for in a dog coat, or better yet, what manufacturers are best? Ideally I'd like to spend around $100 or less, but whatever is clever will help out.

God, I'm going to be that guy... So, ATOT, help me be that guy.

Puppy Batman costume would be my pick. You could get one lines with faux fur; will keep him warm and will not hurt is street cred too much.

The person I got him from said Chihuahua/Rat Terrier. The vet said Chihuahua/Papillon(or Cavalier King Charles Spaniel). He's about 12 pounds regardless.

No windbreaking needed? Would his top coat then act as his missing undercoat? Logically I think my dog should be able to handle cold, I mean, he has a fur coat, something I cannot even afford.

I don't see why it's necessary unless your dog has a concave head or something, but just to be safe, put another sock with holes for his eyes, nose, and mouth so that his ears aren't ravaged by the cold, winter wind. You can also get some babby socks and roll them up into little balls and stick them on his feet.

i would say look for something easy to put on and take off but primarily doesn't constrict his throat if he takes off running while on the leash. other than these considerations i'd look for the most outlandish designs but that's just me. something like a mini-jockey perched majestically atop the back of your chihuaratillon steed.

I don't see the problem. Socks are extremely utilitarian. You may not have a sweater, but I assume you own socks.

I think you need some type of epoxy for fur-on-skin adherence. Don't quote me on that, though.

You don't need a sewing machine. Just cut the ends off of a sock so that it corresponds to the length between your doggie's legs.

I cannot fit it over his dome; neither can I fit it over the back end.

Maybe, but I don't know where to get it. If I cannot get any reccomendations I'm going to try and sew something for my mongrel. I was thinking blue windbreaking layer(I have an old winter coat I can poach from) and green fleece on the legs and chest.
