2 years ago I bought some cheap ($10) PCI 10/100 NICs they work great. I would not spend a bit over $10 for a NIC. I think Fry's was selling them for like $8.00, you pay to much for brand names.
There are many generic cards that work fine. If you open the package - look closely at the chipset on the card itself: If you see a little "crab" logo, then you have a Taiwan-made Realtek chipset - it is a pretty high quality, well supported chipset that will give you trouble-free service. I've bought dozens of these cards and haven't had a single problem with them yet.
