I wish tcwo had a better selection, but with friends I always point them there first because the case + cpu + fan + cdrom + floppy + hard drive is a NICE way to start out and only pay 7 bucks for shipping. I'll eat a little more to get memory from crucial, a video card from some place like newegg, etc.

I remember the first time I ever ordered online it was from PCCost.com and I got one box and they charged me 29 for shipping.. The thing weighed 3 pounds at most so I went off on them and demanded at least 15 bucks back. Magically they credited my CC for that amount :) I was impressed.

actually I was wondering if there is any equivalent store to newegg and mwave outside of california. Newegg and mwave bascily rock. For some items I shop around and still end up buying them at Newegg eventhough I have to pay california tax. Some shops were slighlty lower but I wasn't sure about their reliablity.

He he.... True they hose you on shipping. Must be nice, also, to only make $1 or $2 on a part, ship it out at a profit and then offer virtually NO WARRANTY on a part. You really could make a killing with low margins if you didn't have any customer or technical support.

I've heard the horror stories (right here on Anadtech). You get what you pay for.

<< I just plain and simple think it should be ILLEGAL to make profit from shipping costs >>

They make no profit on shipping costs. They make the profit on the 'handling' cost. This was litigated to death in the 70's and the courts all ruled that they can charge whatever they want for 'handling'. If they only state shipping and don't put in the 'handling' phrase, then they can only charge you what it costs them and not a penny more.

<< That is the ONLY compliant I have with newegg. They nickle & dime you to death with shipping. It seems like with all the technology out there, they would be able to find out what ACTUAL shipping costs (based on zip/weight/carrier/service), and add the handling (box/tape/packing/manhours) to boot. I find it very frustrating that alot of tech e-tailers practically double your shipping costs by doubling your order. This simply does not have to be this way!! I gave them great feedback for selection & prices.. but marked them the lowest on shipping costs, etc. after bizrate popped up after my order.

yeah, it definately is possible for them to calculate cost based on weight and zip code. MWave.com has been doing this for years and also gives you a preview button to find out the cost instead of making you go through entering in shipping and billing info first, like many other sites do.

NewEgg should look at the MWave.com method and see if they can do the same -- It looks like they already rip off enough of MWave's web design. The two sites are very similar, virutally identical (maybe they are run by the same people -- like McGlen and AccessMicro where McGlen has higher prices, but shipping by weight and AccessMicro has lower prices, but per item shipping in a manner similar to NewEgg).
