Is there a newegg equivalent east of the mississippi? An online store with newegg's selection, reliability, low prices? My bud wants to order a bunch of parts but newegg wants to charge $75 for shipping to Maryland i figure a closer store would charge less. Any suggestions?

not necessarily.. depends on the store. but the problem w/ newegg is they charge you for each item, even if you order a bunch from them.

buy.com can have some good prices and shiping is reasonable, won't have everything, but can help. mwave.com is not too bad either.

That is the ONLY compliant I have with newegg. They nickle & dime you to death with shipping. It seems like with all the technology out there, they would be able to find out what ACTUAL shipping costs (based on zip/weight/carrier/service), and add the handling (box/tape/packing/manhours) to boot. I find it very frustrating that alot of tech e-tailers practically double your shipping costs by doubling your order. This simply does not have to be this way!! I gave them great feedback for selection & prices.. but marked them the lowest on shipping costs, etc. after bizrate popped up after my order.
i.e. how is it that:
1 Viking 64MB PC-133 ships @ $5.00 while...
1 Kingston Value RAM 256MB PC133 ships @ $7.00

do the extra 192MB come into play? Why? Don't they weigh approx. the same?

I think if people compained about shipping charges more than they do, we would see some ACTION! Now, don't think I am just totaly against newegg. I'm not. They are one of my favorite online stores (for now). I have just always been one of they people who think it unfair buisiness practice (maybe will write my congressman) to charge more for shipping (**retail cost** -some shippers get discount rates when they deal in bulk.. all I'm asking for is retail!) than it would cost me ship it myself. One of my biggest battles lately was the search for a 2 pin digital internal audio cable for my soundcard. I could find them for under $2.00 easy. But then shipping was nowhere to be found for under $5.00!! I even called them and told them to just stick it in a legal sized envelope and I would be glad to pay the $0.35.. but would they be glad to get a customer (maybe I would buy something later) if it meant for them to do me a favor? The answer is sadly my friends: "No." I guess I'll have to wait & order it when I need something else... I'm sure you all know how that goes...

But at least newegg.com shows you the shipping price on all items before you put it in the shopping cart. I don't think this is unfair at all. It only requires us to do simple addition to find the true cost.

Yeah, i had the same problem looking for a $7 shim. Shipping was always $5-$8! I finally found a place that would ship via first class mail for $2 (still a rip) plus $1 'insurance'. This is why i'm having a hard time recommending newegg to my bud for his stuff because even though he wants to order a lot of stuff, it is pretty light IMO... not like he ordered 10 cases with 300/w power supply. Bah.

The problem is they are using shipping & 'handling' as a profit maker. Should be illegal. I've pretty much given up on pricewatch as most of the vendors there artificially lower their prices to get a high hit and just recoup the loss in the shipping.

Depend's on how you look at it. I bought my Radeon LE there for $78.00 shipped now they have it for $70.00 with $7.00 shipping. Either way you look at ti you still get a good deal. Besides i've ordered several thing's from newegg and the shipping has alway's been prompt.

i don't have a problem if you buy one or two items (tho, even two items can be pushing it)... it's the fact you add 3-4 different things, and each thing costs 7-10$ to ship.. hrmm... that is just not right.

I ordered 3 cases, 3 mobos, 3processors, 3 sticks of ram, 3 HD's, 2 cdroms, 1 DVD drive, some fans, and I forget what else. total was 1200 bucks. I paid about $80 in shipping. I think I got a pretty decent deal on it. of course it took almost a week and a half to get here, with memorial day, but I think I got a really good deal.

If you're complaining about shipping with each new item, DEFINITELY buy from www.tcwo.com

Shipping is about 7 bucks up front.. We're talking you can buy a CDRom, CASE, processor, and maybe another item.. 7 bucks.

So if you order from tcwo.com, you can pretty much count on the prices there to be real close to your total price, with shipping being marginal. When I order a bunch from one retailer I almost always go there.

Edited to add it's in Florida, since you were looking for an East Coast vendor.

See that's not TOO bad.. for the amount of money you spent, and the cases weight.. but shipping these days really is ridiculous. Any other suggestions for an east coast doppleganger :D of newegg?

<edit> shudder you beat me to posting.. thanks for the info </edit>

Umm this has to do with how much they HAVE to sell each unit for.. not where it ships. They weigh close enough to the same that shipping is not effected. They lower the price on the Kinston ram to get you to buy it and make the shipping more.

I dont understand what all the whining is about. It's not like newegg tricks you into paying high shipping costs, it's stated plain and simple. So they dont offer great shipping rates, but they arent totally out of hand.

Rereading my post I realize I wasn't clear on what I was saying. I was not pointing out newegg or mwave or anyone specifically. I was just whining about the high costs of shipping in general especially from vendors who play the pricewatch game. I've seen some companies charge as much as $30. to ship a CPU just so they can get their name at the top of the price list. Ridiculous.

When lookingfor items, add item cost + shipping cost to get total cost. Go for lowest total cost from a reputable dealer.

This isn't rocket science folks...

we know, he's looking for a place to give him lowest total cost. ie, a place that has good prices and doesn't rape you in shipping.. especailly when buying several items.

benchiu, we're not saying newegg is tricking us, we're saying they way they deal with shipping for multiple items is ridiculous.

You have to call them. If you do, they WILL give you a break on the shipping. Just don't be afraid of the phone...

they will? that's really cool.. i tried to call a company once, because i wanted to order 2 sticks of RAM and the shipping was like 20$, and they were 3 states away. They refused. So i gave up on that idea. I guess i'll give newegg a call.

Well I feel kind of guilty of swaying what this topic was all about. Sorry. I just saw someone else experiencing what (most of us anyway) I had experienced. I really am going to call my congress"person" (more Politically Correct - even if they are all men from my state!) Anyhoo.. I total am not "whinning" about newegg in particular. YES the fact IS they do post their shipping costs on a per item basis. As I did more research it "seemed" they do offer breaks based on weight.. (add 2 cpu's to your basket & update for shipping it isn't $20 ($10x2) it is a little over $13. My whole point was (and has been touched on) the fact that these e-tailers are using borderline illegal tactics to get you to go to their store and then blindside you with exorbitant shipping rates. I know there is no one really pressuring me to make the purchase so it is hard to point fingers. I just plain and simple think it should be ILLEGAL to make profit from shipping costs. Profit based upon a "Retail" pricing model. I understand & have no problem with shippers getting a kickback from the shippers based on volume. That's just good business on the carriers part. But like people have mentioned.. and be honest.. how many times have you gone to pricewatch to find them lowballing everybody but then charging an arm & a leg for shipping. Sometimes it is #4 and down that are actually cheaper overall. It wastes consumers time and makes me angry. Anyway.. done venting (for now).

I have just learned that every time I buy using Pricewatch, I just make sure to add component and shipping price. And if shipping price isn't on the pricewatch page and is more than 3 clicks away, I give up.
