an E8500 on a Asus P5N-e SLI

I'm not partial to upgrading my mobo if I don't have to - I like the options I get and kinda "know" this 650i based board like I used to know my nForce 4 Ultra MSI Neo4Plat

I'm fishing around and I've seen some promising things that this might do ok - hopes of getting 4ghz at least. I know my board used to do that but I just updated teh bios this morning in prep of the new chip and well I know it does 1333 fine with my CAS3 ram but not if FSB still hits 425mhz (believe that was my E6600 FSB wall)

I wanted to find out if any of my fellow AT'ers that use(d) the P5N-e SLI board tried with an E8500 or even an E8400

Hit me up here and I'll turn this into a results post after I'm done testing (hopefully this weekend)
*now with on going results*

Ok - got it and installed last night - used the TRUE 120 I've had sitting collecting dust. Love the mounting vs the Ninja I've been using forever.

Easy as pie so far on "low" clocking. Had some issues on my Ballistix but I'm not sure if thats my memory or my chipset not liking 4 gigs at 400mhz fsb but i picked up a pair of Mushkin Redline DDR2-1000 2gig sticks and they're working fine at EPP settings.

Back to cpu clocking - really just booted - went to bios - set 1600 fsb - set the voltage initially to 1.3v (comes to 1.33v actual) and booted

ram OCCP for an hour - per coretemp i was hitting 62c - per realtemp I was hitting 52c

*honestly not sure which is more accurate*

Dropped the voltage down to 1.2v (1.23v actual) and ran OCCP for 6 hours while I slept last night - no errors - got a couple of degree's lower temps than before and just set it to run OCCP while i'm at work all day. Same settings 400mhz at 1.23v with the Mushkin at DDR2-1000 5-5-5-12 T2 2.01v

will post more later - initial results for now

Ok...OCCP was good for at work 9 hour run at the above settings

So I'm currently running my testing at 4ghz - on a 450mhz fsb and 9x multi - will try for higher but i'm doing this step by step to better learn these new voltages and temps and toy with the 0.5 multi in a bit too

So far I've left the NB voltages on Auto - still set the ram to run on the DDR2-1000 EPP profile (except the voltage set at 2.01v) - quadpumped FSB is at 1800 - vcore is set at 1.218 in bios - comes out to being 1.248-1.25v per cpuz

disabled all power saving options

It would be less stressful on your motherboard if you ran 425x9.5, instead of 450x9. That's an amazing chip you have there, BTW. Keep us informed about how high you get it stable.

update - got home and at the 1.248v stress testing it had crapped out after 1 hour

stable'ish... but not full stable - i'm getting ready to bump the volts to the next higher step and see there - will take myocardia's advice and check out 9.5x425 instead too

*edit

did just one notch up on the vcore and doesn't appear to have increased it any but we'll see if it does add to the stability

upped the multi and lowered the fsb - unfortunately DDR2-1000 isn't 425mhz fsb friendly so i'm running the ram at 1:1 for 850mhz instead of running at the partial speed (came out to 991.17mhz

*************************************
anyone got personal thermal experience on these chips and which program is best for monitoring it?

got the real temp program advice from xtremesystems so i'm partial to believing its right but i've been using coretemp for a long time in comparison now...

**just hit the hour mark again - going still

*******

error at 2.5 hours.... - time for another bump

ok - just got done running at 1.264v for 8 hours - stable with no errors OCCT (honestly I think it stresses my cpu's more than prime does)

http://johndoe.hotlightbulb.com/8hoursat4ghz.JPG

beware thats my cluttered desktop at 1920x1200 (dial up warning)

as there is a 10 degree difference on the 2 programs - the peak i hit was either 65c or 55c. I'd be kinda interested in finding out if 65c was truthful at such low voltage. possible i need to do a remount and reapply of AS5

ok - tested for 5+ hours OCCT at 4275mhz at 1.328v - really had to crank the voltage up on it to get it stable - it would boot but crash with in 30 minutes until i set it to 1.3v in bios

i did do the pencil mod on my board a long time ago to stabilize vDroop - now it overvolts by approx 0.03v from bios settings but i get no vDroop - FYI

max temp loaded was 63c and it evened out for 60c - i idle around 45c with this setting - will test some performance benchies to see where I stand - might try putting my ballistix back in to see how some low latency memory reacts but i'm happy with the Mushkin for now (especially for what I paid for it 😛 ... you don't wanna even know 🙂 )

What makes you think I don't wanna know?😀 I won't be jealous, I only paid $79.99 with free shipping for my G.Skill 2x2 GB PC8000, which has exactly the same IC's that your RAM has. Wait, was it cheaper than that? I guess I could be slightly jealous.😉

edit: I'm definitely jealous of your E8500, though. That's some insanely low voltage for almost 4.3 Ghz.

hehe - well sir i'll let you in on a little secret - I paid less than $200 for the Ram and the cpu together - jealous now 😛

RAM and memory are the same thing. Do you mean RAM and processor? If so, you shouldn't buy stolen merchandise.

*ops you're right memory and cpu

not stolen *even got the free copy of Quake Wars newegg gave away with it*
- i just happened to know a guy that upgraded to a QX9650 and 8 gigs of G.Skill who just wanted the extra gear off his hands - good guy and I lucked out on this one - if more had been available at this price I'd have jumped on them
woke up after running a defrag and got a BSOD - will work on stability testing some more - might need to manually set the NB voltage instead of auto and might need to actually lower the memory ram down from 2.08v

I have been trying to get past a 3.6 OC block with 800mhz ram. I cant get to 3.7 oc.
I have been trying, on and off, ever since I got my e8400. I have enough cooling to kill a cat, so I dont think its heat. I monitor with speed fan(adjusted by real temp numbers), I have about two full sheets of notebook paper with all the different settings Ive tried (linked, synce, +100mv, cranking up voltages, auto mem, changed timings a million times, , disable speed step, etc). I just cant seem to get it past 3.6. I was just going for 3.7(425mhz). My conclusion is my ram is keeping me back. I got some Corsair Dominiators 1066mhz on the way. I just have to know if its my memory or not.

I can nudge the ram a little over 800mhz but not alot. I am running linked and synced at the moment. Im wouldnt call myself an expert overclocker, but Ive been overclocking for a couple of years and understand most oc terms and basics.

first off sir - your numbers a bit off "3.7(425mhz)" 3.7 is actually 411.111111 at your default 9x multi - no worries just wanted to put that out there

and whats the highest vcore you've tried? 1.2125v for 3.6ghz isn't too shabby and is about on par with most chips - just trying to get a feeling for your progress so far

you should be able to get your memory at least to 850mhz (that'd be 1:1 for 425fsb) - if you really think memory is the culprit you can underclock it to less than 800 by running unlinked and see what kinda whole numbers come out as what you input - try 667, 700, 720, 730, 750, etc - i always come across my board "changing" the memory speed if its not a decent multi i'm attempting to set it to - trust me thats one advantage our nvidia chipset has over the intel ones

send me a pm or post up your highest voltages you've tried for memory and for the cpu - also what bios rev is your board on?

*edit*
welcome to anandtech - see thats your first post

Okay, now I'm jealous. Try raising your VTT a single step, BTW.

Tacoturtle, you're going to need more Vcore, to go higher. You'll probably want to start with 1.30 or 1.325v, and see how much higher that gets you. It should get you close to 4Ghz, although maybe not with complete stability. Oh, and you'll most likely burn that chip up at 4Ghz, with your AC Freezer 7. 4Ghz requires a considerable amount of extra cooling, over what 3.6 requires.

Thanks for the quick replies and for the correction. I've messed around with so many settings its all starting to run together.
I wanted to get to at least 3.7 first. I have all spectrum stuff off, and dont use the +100mv unless said in listing below.

From here out I tried setting timings to 5-5-5-18-2T trc from 22-24 with noboots.
I also tried a config I saw that a guy had for 4.0 on the same board and cpu:

1.36vcore
Mem Voltage Auto
1.563v nb
vocre offset +100mv
unlinked, fsb 1650
pci-frequency 101 then put back to 100
= NO BOOT

I tried variations on the above with timings from 5-5-5-15-2T to 5-5-5-18-2T
I think I also tried the trc at 28 once. Im not trying for 4.0 at the moment, but rather to figure out why it wont go past 3.6. I think cooling is not the issue, I have plenty of cooling. I havent tried to lower the memory yet, I'll try that to see what happens.
Thanks for all the input!

I then tried some 6-6-6 timings, and set 5-5-5-31-2T and hangs at windows boot up.

I noticed I cant set the trc past 31 in my bios, is this whats holding back the ram to 1629? Ok, enough overclocking. Off to cod4 land to vent. 🙂

I'm mildly baffled by this but I'm almost thinking your board might be the limiting factor - do a test and try to drop down the cpu multi to 6 and see how far on the fsb you can boot and run stable. See if you can run past your 1625fsb wall. Also you could be hitting some fsb holes for your system - just for giggles do a bigger jump and run it at 1700fsb (425mhz actual and see if it posts boot)

I'll give that a try. Good thinking. I am using the same board you are and bios version 900. Im thinking its the ram. I got some ddr2-1066 on the way so I'll know more then. Your oc the e8500 to 4.0 so i would figure I could at least get to 3.7 on the e8400.

Different boards man - I have had 2 of these boards and they act differently. The other board wouldn't run as high on the FSB as this one and it burned up ram all the time. Haven't run into this one doing that but I do know it doesn't like to run 4 sticks of memory at high FSB and the other one would just fine (burned it up but would do it)

overclocking isn't an exact thing i got an update on mine below

**overclock update**

upped the vCore a notch and got an error after 4 hours of orthos but same temps. (decided to try that instead of OCCT) - i'm kinda happy with that but will do some more runs after I do some more adjusting - possible too high on the vDimm (still at 2.08v) will run some lower voltage runs on memtest and still auto on the NB

not sure on this memory just yet and might put in some Corsair Fatbody D9's 512mb sticks I have (epic memory that runs CAS4 DDR2-1000)

So even though the boards are the same make, doesnt mean they will act the same. 🙁 Well, they should generally act the same, but a very good point none the less. I wonder if I could RMA it?

Honestly before you start thinking about going that route try what I suggested about seeing how high of an FSB your board can do - the added benefit of that could be you *might* find your cpu's fsb wall

Will do. I hope this is helpful to others. I have scowered the internet for months looking for solutions and just now am posting for help. I couldnt really find the exact issue. Most people are settling for 3.6 with the e8400 and not posting about it I assume if it fails past that. I'll try these tonight and let ya know.
Thanks!!!!!
