An attempt to excercise more. How good is it?

Well, here it goes.

I am lucky to own 2 nice bikes. Problem is that it gets dark real soon and it's hot as hell in the afternoon here so there is not much time to ride besides weekend mornings. At least until fall and winter comes.

So to remedy this problem and get some cardio done on weekdays I got this trainer for my old MTB.
I'll do 3/4 - 1 hour/day and it's the second day so far.
How much difference will this make you think? Good for weight loss and cardio training?

Whoa! That's cool. I'd much rather ride on a stationary bike than a real bike. I love being outside, but I'm up at night, which is a bad time to ride outside.

I don't think it would be as much fun but i think it would work... 😀

Ever thought about trying a spinning class? Lots of ladies... 😉

I actually wanted to pick one of those up... but then everyone in my family would get on it... 🙁 ...and make my bike a whore that everyone rode already... 😕

<--- selfish 😛

Funny. I'm totally at the same point.

to hot and crap to bike so I was looking at a trainer. I'd been pretty much looking at that price point too.

I'd ove to know how it works out. I'm afraid it would break.

Let us know.

It works great and the price is right.
I use it on a MTB and I did put on slick tires. You DO NOT want to ride nobby tires on a trainer. VERY NOISY!
I put on 1.25" slicks but I should have taken 1.5" ot thicker because the adjustment for the roller is all maxed out.

Well the local shop is turning into Supergo and they had these on sale for $59 + tax. You don't need coupons to get it at that price.
Just order from Supergo.

Depending on intensity, you'll be burning roughly 400-700 kcal per hour of riding, so you could easily knock of an extra pound or so per week if you stick to it. As far as fitness goes, anything over 20 min per day is going to be beneficial. Obviously more is better (to an extent) but it's certainly light years better than just being sedentary. One word of advice with the trainer; try to think up different kinds of workouts for different days so you don't get bored. If you train at one intensity all the time, you'll make slower progress and be more likely to get sick of it. You might also want to look into training vids to follow on the bike. Do a google search for "Spinervals"...I've heard those really suck so they must be good. 😉

Nobody seems to get it . . . it does NOT matter what exercise you choose - just that you STICK to it regularly.

Any "additional" exercise is good - it really helps to like it and look forward to it.

Agreed. I kinda liken it to pouring water in a bucket. Even a little bit will fill the bucket (fitness) over time. If you have long gaps between workouts, more water will evaporate than you put back (ie- you lose fitness). Do too much too quickly and you'll overfill the bucket (injury/burnout).

They also make the kind with rollers where you set your bike on the rollers and pedal away. You aren't physically connected to anything and can still steer and such. But they can be dangerous because you can go off the side or crash if you aren't careful.

I don't think either is as good as the real thing because on the road you get hills, turns, etc that all help. But I'm sure it's better than just sitting aroudn watching movies. 🙂

They just take some practice. The nice thing about rollers is that they teach you good pedaling form.

True, but you can't watch movies while riding out on the road or trails. 😀
