Sounds more like names Counter Culture 70's turned Yuppy Scum would give their kids.

I must admit... I have never seen a Black guy named Jake nor a White guy named DeShawn. 🙂
I've heard of a white Tyrone though.

I know a white Dominique and a white Alexus (2 actually).

Another very visible way popular black culture is torpedoing itself.

You can virtually guarantee a lack of success when you do everything you can to NOT fit in with mainstream society.

Come on, where is Shenaynay.

I can tell you with out even reading the article that blacks name their kids like this because they want them to have a unique name that will differentiate their child from all the other children, where as they are only hurting their childs chance of success.
There is also a definate move with low income blacks to segregate from the normal culture of their community and establish their own identity. I wish they could see it for themselves, but the reason that they feel everything is racially motivated is because of actions they take.
I mean, seriously, when you see someone named Shaniqua on Mori Povich looking for her baby daddy what's the 1st thing that comes to mind?? Then look at the flip side, you see James Earl Jones or Collin Powell and what do you think?

Hmm, wonder what category "Felipe" would fall under? But I would imagine your last name would have of an impact then your first. For example Molly Silva would recieve less job oppertunities then Sasha Smith.

I remember when this vietnamese guy was busted in the Bay 101 casino scandal, he was pictured in the newspaper along with his daughter 'Mercedes' and son 'Benz'.

Who in the hell would name their kids after an auto.

But then again Gwenyth Paltrow named her daughter 'Apple'.

You know, Classy is going to come rushing in this thread calling us all racists.

Because, of course, how someone names their child is somehow inherent to their race...

That's funny, I knew a girl in high school named Swhaniqueauaque.

Her name was just pronounced "shaniqua".

This is my proposal, regardless of skin color -

When a child is born, the following takes place:
1. The parents choose a name.

2. They must now spell the name out loud 3 times and get it right all 3 times. Spell it wrong just once and they have to pick a new name.

3. If they pass the spelling test, then 3 different doctors and/or nurses will read the written name and pronounce it. If all 3 come up with reasonably similar pronunciations, you may keep the name.

I don't really care if you want to name your child DeShawn...just make sure everyone can spell and pronounce it.

Actually, Mercedes is a woman's name, you ignoranus.

Snipped from some website:

The Mercedes-Benz brand is a line-up of cars manufactured and marketed by the DaimlerChrysler company. The name Mercedes and Benz have two separate origins, and not specifically related at that. Mercedes is the name of the daughter of Emil Jellinek, an Austrian dealer who entered Daimler cars in races in the name of her daughter. When he took care of Daimler car exports in the international arena, especially in France, Belgium and the US, he suggested that the cars be branded as Mercedes. This was done and the brand Daimler became only a brand for the luxury Daimler cars marketed in England.

The Benz appended on the Mercedes brand has an entirely different origin. It was a result of the merge between the Daimler-Motoren-Gesellschaft (DMG) with Benz & Cie in the 1920s, when the company became the Daimler-Benz AG. Ever since, every Mercedes car sold by the company was called Mercedes-Benz.

A great number of black names I hear are stupid. I hear a lot of dumb ones from whites too, but the black are stupid. By stupid I mean less traditional. I read something that showed people with untraditional names seem to do worse, in some categories of life, which isn't surprising, because if you name your kid lakweesha or something it's just annoying, and I think a lot of people will see a black person with that name as more ghetto than a girl with the name Jessica.
The data show that, on average, a person with a distinctively black name?whether it is a woman named Imani or a man named DeShawn?does have a worse life outcome than a woman named Molly or a man named Jake. But it isn't the fault of his or her name. If two black boys, Jake Williams and DeShawn Williams, are born in the same neighborhood and into the same familial and economic circumstances, they would likely have similar life outcomes. But the kind of parents who name their son Jake don't tend to live in the same neighborhoods or share economic circumstances with the kind of parents who name their son DeShawn. And that's why, on average, a boy named Jake will tend to earn more money and get more education than a boy named DeShawn. DeShawn's name is an indicator?but not a cause?of his life path.
I can see that, though it doesn't entirely match up the findings with the resumes.
