I thought about this, and if enough people are interested, I think it would be a cool thing to start.

The basics (which could be changed, this is the thread to pound things out) could be something like this:

Members vote on a book to read
We read it in whatever time we decide
Have a thread to discuss the book
Choose a different genre every time (things like mystery, book/movie combos, action, etc etc)

It could be a great way to start reading new topics and read some new books and classics that otherwise we would have never have read. And, after reading an awesome book, don't you always wish you had someone you could discuss it with, or just share its awesome moments. This way you could have a bunch.

Its online, so no obligation, or much time put in besides the actual reading. You could easily sit out or not participate if you have already read the book or are too busy at the time.

I think it would be pretty cool to discuss the books with the many different personalities on here, and just to read some great books.

Vote in the poll and let me know what you think, it may sound to some like a female thing to do, but I think with all the great intellectuals on here it could be a nice thing to do to pass some time in the evening after work, or schooling etc.

So let me know if you would like to participate, and I will get things organized if enough interest is shown.

If it was, you can just take a break while we read it. Nice and laid back, if you can't read it no problem.

I get very busy also at times, and could easily understand not having enough time to read it, because hey this is the internet, and stuff in our lives comes first. :)

I just don't want you to be brokenhearted when you start your first thread to discuss the book everyone agreed to read, and replies 1..n are "Cliffs?" :p

Seriously, it's a good idea, and good luck with it!

I usually stick to fantasy or sci-fi, but I've surprised myself recently by reading and enjoying several books outside my acquired tastes. Makes me wonder what else is out there. Count me in.

Edit: Do we get to add "Official member of the AT Book Club" to our sigs? That would be soooo sweet...

Hopefully they'll all be books that are so good that you don't want them to end. I've read lots of books (700+ pages) that ended at the appropriate time and everything but I was still disappointed because I wanted more. If anyone can suggest a book like that then the whole deal will be worth it.

The length is more about my fear that I wouldn't have it read in time. I'm not the fastest reader!

I don't really know any books like that, as I tend to read books in series. As a school teacher I also tend to find myself drawn to books that are geared towards children. I read all kinds of books though. In fact, I am currently reading "Bored of the Rings". :D

Sounds like a good idea, but I'm running out of vacation time fast so the first book would have to be a real page turner. :)

I'm in. Excellent idea. I'm about 1/5 of the way through Jules Verne's "The Mysterious Island" atm though, so all of you should go out and buy it and catch up (pretty easy read). Very interesting stuff.
